I come from a small town of 500 people and I plan on attending a 30,000 student university, my real question is what should I expect my first week or two of college ? Will I be in culture shock ? What tips would you give to help me have success ?

I came from a town of about 900 people to a school that had 40,000 undergrads. A lot of this will come down to where you go to school at. I’ll just speak for my experience.

My school didn’t do a welcome week, it was more of a long weekend (moved in Sunday, classes started Wednesday). I was pretty busy on the Monday I moved in with different events. I had a tour of my major (Q&A panel, meet the profs, meet the adviser, general info), time to go find my classes around campus, a big event to go learn about and join clubs, and a ton of other stuff. Tuesday was a more laid back day. My school offers a lot of events for people to encourage freshmen to talk to each other. On top of that there are parties off campus that you can go to if that is your thing and most people on your floor will be looking to meet people so you’ll have a lot of visitors.

If there will be a culture shock really depends on your school. My school is the same one my parents went to and one of the big areas near my home town so I was there fairly often to start with plus it feels kind of rural since we do a lot of stuff with agriculture. I had to get use to all the people and bikes when I walk to class and how loud it can be out at night. It can be funny to walk into a classroom and realize that there are more people in that room than you graduated with. You get use to it fairly quickly.

The biggest tip I would have would be not to sweat it. It’s different but not in a bad way. It’s really not a big deal at all.

thanks for the help ! I am attending WVU next fall
