First World Problems Dept.: the disappointing $1 million wedding

I do not care if it was a $1M or a $10K wedding. To me, the most fascinating part of this story is that two apparently business-savvy parties - business owners! - did not come up with a well-drafted contract and a budget. Where was the lawyer of the planning co? This disaster, if it evolves into a big legal brawl with juicy details, sounds like a contracts 101 case for law students. :slight_smile:

I’m sticking to my hunch that, even though this family is very wealthy, they were dazzled by Weiss to some extent. Even I know who she is (and I don’t follow the wedding circuit). They didn’t want to squawk too loudly (how bourgeois) then the whole thing spun out of control quickly. Purely a guess on my part though.

There are some very wealthy people in southern Florida who would love to name drop Weiss as their wedding planner.

Just because people can afford something doesn’t mean they have access to it.

Looks like there might be a pattern of unclear expectations/contracts and not paying bills here?

^^nice research @doschicos! :slight_smile:

I like the bridesmaids dresses, how they are different lengths and especially how they are white. Most people only want the bride and flower girl in white but this works with the shorter dresses.

In the photos, some people are looking to the side, some have shrugs on, etc. - it is not so military and formal as most wedding photos. The magazine did a good job! (who knows what the official photos look like
)

More detail - read the bottom couple of paragraphs which make me feel there is more to the story. I also get the feeling that the Carls “live large” even for people who seem to have wealth but not enough wealth to show up on any wealthiest Americans lists.

Yet another lawsuit, this one contains some interesting, entertaining communications from the French firm retained to help the Carls acquire D. Porthault about nonpayment by the Carls.

A pattern here?

Is this the same dude?

Hopefully, his attorneys are paid in advance and have a solid written contract signed by all parties.

My dog poops three times just on our walks. Add one after each meal, and another one for good measure at some point during the day. He is absolutely prolific.

^^ha ha that’s the truth @HImom.

Yup @BunsenBurner that’s one and the same!! Wonder if he keeps his personal lawyers on retainer?

@doschicos

A bit of googling establishes several things. The French case against Bernard Carl was dismissed by the French courts. The plaintiffs then did several things in an effort to get the money they claimed they were owed. One of the things they did was publish a statement on the internet that he owed the money to them and refused to pay it. Bernard Carl sued them for defamation and some other things. He lost the other points, but WON his defamation claim. Apparently a company he controlled hired attorneys to do some work. Without Carl’s knowledge, the firm subcontracted some of the work it had agreed to perform to another firm. The firm Carl had contracted with failed to pay the subcontractor. Carl said he hadn’t hired the second firm, hadn’t known that the firm he had hired had subcontracted some of the work, and wasn’t liable for the payment. I haven’t checked the subsequent history of this case, but at least initially, the federal district judge ruled in Carl’s favor, i.e., that the second firm had defamed him by posting on the internet that he owed them money and refused to pay it. To do that, it had to find he didn’t owe the firm any money.

So,IMO, there’s no pattern here
except perhaps that the Carls don’t fold and settle whenever someone threatens to sue them.

BTW, I do not know the Carls from Adam.

well, speaking of lawyers, here’s a suit filed by some lawyers claiming Carl did not pay them:

@jonri Yes, I read that link I posted before. :slight_smile:

Same Bernie?

The odds of multiple Bernard Carls in the Hamptons around the same age having multiple lawsuits? You can connect the dots yourself.

The horror! This poor wedding family. .

If you have the money then why not spend it. to them the $1M might be like $10K to all of us.

Re post 82–lawsuit about the horses. If the facts were as laid out then the people hired by Carl as his representatives were clearly ripping him off big time and needed to be sued. Just because you have money doesn’t mean other people get to help themselves to it.

I wonder how much they spent on flowers alone? Apparently the outdoor display was a last-minute addition when the garden wasn’t blooming as expected. The centerpieces and chandelier greenery are beautiful but excessive, flowers and greenery packed in. I think they would have been more beautiful if space were incorporated into the design.

Sticking roses into the ground like soldiers is just dumb. And, no, they don’t look like wildflowers!

The linens are exquisite. I will never own any ($5k for a queen sheet set?) but I’m glad that they exist.

I don’t understand the comments about the MOB’s looks. I saw in one article that her first trip to France was in 1966, with her sister. Presumably, she was at least 18 at that time? That would put her at around 70 now. She looks like she is in her 50’s, and she looks good for that age.

Post 93–and the court threw both sides out apparently.
Really, dragging up old law suits does not have any bearing on the wedding thing.

I don’t understand how or why Weiss would be fronting such amounts to her vendors unless she was just hoping to that Carl would just pay the bills after the fact and she’d make a tidier profit than she would have otherwise.

Part of the problem is probably that her home base is CA and he’s in NY. That’s where her vendors that she works with are stationed (so travel costs etc) and he was expecting local vendors. Who knows?

At any rate I can’t imagine any business fronting money to the tune of 350K on the hope with no contract (and no budget–apparently no nothing) and expecting to be repaid timely if at all Her business must have a very healthy checking account.

He did have separate contracts it appears with the flower guy, photographer etc who have all been paid (and I doubt those bills were cheap!). But that was under his control.
