First Year Seminars

I have no idea if this has been posted yet, but are we required to take them? Do you recommend taking them?

You don't have to take them but TAKE ONE TAKE ONE TAKE ONE TAKE ONE TAKE ONE.

Haha ok. Do you mind me asking why?

They are reportedly some of the best classes. Taught by some of the best professors. YOu can use them to fulfill some of your requirements as well. Everyone raves about how good these classes are.

I had a whole list of them and all of my top choices were already taken when I went to register. I did get one I was interested in on Sonnets.

Do you know if FYS ever become available during the drop/add period?

^I've heard they open up a lot more during drop/add. None of my top choices were open when I registered, but I at least got into one...

I registered for classes today during CTOPS, and I rechecked, rechecked, and rechecked, and at the end I finally was able to snag the FYS I wanted. I am so excited.

Which one did you get into?

I'm in "Physics of Movies." It sounded pretty cool, and only a couple of my 10ish choices were still available, so I picked it. It was either this one or the pokemon/godzilla/japanese one.

FYSs are SO great! They are all really unique! I wish I had taken more. Some first year seminars fulfill general education requirements that are otherwise a pain to fulfill (like visual art and philosophical and moral reasoning... and US diversity), so I recommend taking advantage of them while you can.

I'm a senior, and I never took a FYS. I asked my advisor if I could take one next semester to fulfill EE (what a pain that requirement is), but she said I couldn't. Oh well! Ha ha. I've heard of people either loving or hating their first-year seminars. I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but I just never bothered with it.

What make them so good is that the profs are really eager to teach them and often times bring other people in the field in to talk about what they're up to. I took Reverberations with Mark Katz and it really changed my life at Carolina. It was all about the DJ. From taking the class I started DJing at Carolina, went to a DJ school in London, and have used Katz to write some of my letters of rec.

I'm in the Pokemon one! Haha. Or I could pretend to be fancy and say it's the one about animals in Japanese religion, but that would be dishonest.

I took the Sports and Competition FYS last semester--AMAZING and fun class, got to meet so many athletes (football AND basketball!), not too difficult, fulfilled my PH requirement--I would definitely recommend trying one that you're interested in that can take care of a tough requirement or two!
By the way, in my experience, it was MUCH easier to get into a FYS in spring semester (if you didn't take one in the fall, you get first dibs). So don't feel discouraged if you can't get into one now!

I'm in the one about Sex and Politics! However, I'm going to try to get into the one about Style: A mode of expression.
