How prevalent are marijuana and alcohol on campus?

Alcohol: Ubiquitous (you can live on a sub-free floor, but alcohol is everywhere on the weekends)
Marijuana: Prevalent, but not as much as alcohol. People do smoke, but I tend to think this is harder on academic performance than alcohol, so most people stop by their junior year when the work picks up.

Both pretty average, typical of what you’d expect of a college campus. Carleton is not dry, alcohol is commonplace and tolerated so long as discretion reigns. It’s very easy to not drink and feel no pressure to do so. Substance free floors are great options if you’re so inclined, no negatives attached. Many prefer even if they do drink just to have a quieter home when they bed down!

Another plug here for sub free floors. It seems like they tend to be more tight knit socially and I’ve found it’s incredibly easy to make great friends. Sub free floors all have a mix of people who choose sub free for all sorts of reasons. Always something to do. Never boring.

Basically, what people said before me. alcohol is definitely very prevalent, but also avoidable. I would say the majority of students drink at least weekly. Plenty of us are nerds who like to let loose on the weekends. The RA’s and administration are also pretty chill about it. the main rule is don’t be stupid, aka don’t drink (too obviously) in public and don’t so wasted you have to be sent to the hospital. Campus security and the RA’s are not out to get you in trouble. However, if you don’t wish to partake in drinking, it is very easy to avoid. Most people on substance free floors don’t drink and there are people on the “regular” floors as well who choose to not drink (at all or at least most of the time). That being said, being on a sub-free floor doesn’t mean you cant drink, (other than the legal aspects) only that you can’t have alcohol on your floor. The most common kinds of alcohol would probably be hard liquor and mixed drinks, although people do drink beer, especially when it comes to pong or drinking games.

As for weed, it is somewhat less prevalent than alcohol, mostly because of the fact that, unlike alcohol it is legally not allowed at all, but is not at all impossible to find. If you want to partake, you easily can, but if you wish to avoid it, it is extremely easy. You may smell it around every so often but will rarely see it if you aren’t looking.

So, in summary, for both substances there is little pressure to take part, but if you want to, you can.

I just want to emphasize the point that there is never any pressure to drink. People are pretty cool with whatever choices regarding alcohol you want to make.
