I am from a rural state and did not apply to UChi out of high school and very much regret it. I ended up matriculating to UVA with a merit scholarship but really do not like the large school feel that UVA offers. I am very interested in applying to UChi as a transfer for my Sophomore year. Does anyone know what GPA I need from fall term to have a chance? Does anyone have any advice or past experiences they can share?

My HS states in a nutshell:

#4/276 in my class with a 4.6 GPA

33 SuperScore ACT

I would like to study PreMed/Comm and am currently very involved on the UVA campus.

Its definitely doable and unlike Harvard we’ll likely have transfer slots open (ex. last year one of my friends hated the whole “life of the mind” and taking philosophy classes thing and transferred to Wharton so he could focus on becoming an investment banker). That said I’d recommend a 4.0 GPA or as high as you can get, 2 years ago I knew a guy from Emory who transferred into Uchicago and he had a high gpa as well. I wouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket though and would probably find some other school to transfer to as well.

The transfer rate has been stupidly low in recent years - in the one percent range. At that point, prayer is your best bet. Nothing other then good luck will do it.

I don’t believe it will be possible to transfer in as part of the 2016 class. Last year, U of C over admitted freshman applicants. The targeted class size was 1400, but 1525+ arrived in September due to a jump in admit yield. Besides 125+ too many students, there are also plans to take a dorm out of service in June 2013 to construct a new dorm in its stead. There’s bound to be a on-campus housing crunch for new students.

There is no “Comm” major or department at the U of C. Try Northwestern or Penn.

As you may know the transfer admit rate at the top schools is lower than their regular admissions rate. UChicago has just about the lowest transfer admit rate in the country:
