FIT Admission Chances

FIT is my dream school, and has been for awhile. However I do understand that it is very competitive and do not want to get my hopes up. My high school GPA is a 3.4, and I have multiple extracurricular activities.
Here is my essay:

My childhood was unusual to many that surrounded me. Being born into a technologically connected era, most children’s time was spent in front of a computer screen or on countless television channels. My parents however, raised me deprived of both television cable and electronics. Due to the fact that there were only 7 channels to watch, I often resorted to the Style Network. After watching one episode of the show, “How Do I Look,” I was instantly hooked to the channel. An Estée Lauder quote I heard while watching one day really stuck with me: “People do make their luck by daring to follow their instincts, taking risks, and embracing every possibility.” Little did I know, this channel and quote would be the seed behind my enthusiasm for fashion and drive for success.

Ever since then, I have made that quote my way of life. I am continually hunting for the next opportunity, and challenging precedents set by society. Being a Scorpio, I was embedded with such powerful characteristics. Scorpios are described as being those possessing: intense passion, willpower, valiance, determination, and ambition. Throughout my life, those characteristics that I continue to embrace have enabled me to chase whatever dream it was that I had.
Those formative moments watching the Style Network created a fire inside me to pursue my ever-growing passion for fashion. It was only a short amount of time until I began creating art of my own. At 10 years old, I started to design second-hand jewelry, each combining pieces that had stories to tell from earlier lives. My mother and I would go to local garage sales, hunting for what she would call “hidden gems.” I would then take these products which I saw filled with potential, and revamp them to feed a more modern feel. To this day, I have continued to design jewelry that allows people to express their inner thoughts and beliefs in an artistic way. I did whatever I could to promote my jewelry from selling at local flea markets, going to art shows, to creating an online store. I had an intense passion inside me to fabricate quality jewelry that people loved, and I was willing to do anything to achieve that. In retrospect, I believe that my personal characteristics are what have made my business such a success.

During my junior year, I was determined to take the next step in my dreams by working for a well known fashion business. Through lots of back and forth emails and phone calls, I was given an amazing opportunity with an internship at Tony Walker & Company for Fashion Business Management. Throughout my experience interning, I learned a lot about myself and the industry I was pursuing. My internship entailed working with the head buyer for the store, and provided me knowledge and skill set from some of the most talented fashion individuals in the area. All my ambition and hard work later granted me a position working for the company. Working for Tony Walker gave me insight into what high end retail businesses were like. Being one of the youngest workers there, I immediately had many footsteps to follow in. At age 16, I was selling some of the most influential and luxury brands the fashion industry has seen. From Tom Ford perfume to Hudson Jeans, I gained familiarity selling all types of luxurious brands and products. The experiences I gained from Tony Walker were only the beginning in my journey, as they were my foundation in which to grow.

The Fashion Institute of Technology is a place which will allow my dreams to become reality. With many motivated and hard working people within one of the greatest fashion cities in the world, it is truly a blooming garden for success. Ever since I can remember, I have always dreamed of achieving greatness. I will thrive at the Fashion Institute not only due to my experience, but due to my willingness to never give up on something I believe in. I have come to agree with Estée Lauder that there is no such thing as “luck” when it comes to success. I have found from my experiences that success comes when you create possibilities, and go out and make that “luck” for yourself, a frame of mind that inspires to push forward. Although one cannot measure success by the endless possible accomplishments, I believe that success can be measured by putting aside fear, and pursuing something that has always shaped my dreams.

Please let me know what you think!

“Throughout my experience interning, I learned a lot about myself and the industry I was pursuing.”
I believe it should be learnt and not learned.

The quote seems cheesy - or at least it does to me. Try to change that.

But overall, great essay. Maybe talk a little more about the intersection between fashion and business, and how that concerns you?

Also, I wouldn’t post a college essay in a public forum such as CC. Try being more confidential about it in the future.
