Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Just passing along an article on delaying the inevitable, the loss of muscle and mobility, as we age. Sad!

Great progress! If you have any new foods or recipes to recommend, drop by the HealthyHabits food thread

Also a reminder that this thread is fitness, nutrition, health so we have always shared nutrition/cooking/food tips here as well.

We did a cool 5 mile hike at small state park near where a friend of my wife lives (at one point we could see the backs of houses in her development). We had a ton of ran over the last couple of days so things were super muddy.

My husband, a product of the 60s - is retiring later this year and has decided he’s willing to try and eat healthier. Step 1 - moved on from potato rolls to Dave’s Killer bread for lunch each day. He’s also been eating more salads and much less sugar than he used to, and not so much pasta.
I’ve got to take advantage of his new attitude and find some great tasting healthy recipes for both of us.
We both get lots of exercise, although his consists almost exclusively of running and or doing the elliptical. He agrees he needs to start stretching more.

Sounds like he is off to a good start - maybe thanks to his wife! Healthier grains and more veggies and some fruit are a great way to adjust eating!

My husband and I both like Dave’s killer bread. Sometimes I buy the Thin version, but that is mostly for me (I freeze some of it.

Today I was able to cross country ski at the local lake trail. My goal was to just hang with it for at least 20 minutes, but it was a glorious day so was out there 65 minutes. Near the end, I got worried that my headband was gone and lost my balance checking. After falling, I was a bit afraid somebody might try to help me up (of course it was the area near end, by the parking lot - many walkers). On the flat, it was really hard to recover. There was a point I decided it would be OK if somebody did help… was considering taking off the skis (also tough from the ground). But yay, I finally managed to get back up. Then came home and cycled on the trainer bike for 20 min.

I’ve been xc skiing. It’s my favorite thing to do.

Today I was watching the Olympic Nordic ski race, mens. The leader fell at one point and the commentators said, he just lost his focus for a minute.

That’s exactly what xc skiing is like! I fell yesterday climbing a hill, I was worried about the skiers behind me and lost my concentration. Falling uphill is hard! I did the splits and getting up isn’t easy. But I did of course. Felt stupid because it was I was “seen”.

But hey, it apparently happens to even the gold medal winner!

If I did the splits, 911 would have to be called to put me back the right way. Good for you getting out there!

I saw that fall by the Olympian! They make it look so easy though, don’t they?

I’m still a relative “light-weight” when it comes to exercise, but I’ve been doing much better during my retirement.
I can’t remember the last time I didn’t exercise for at least an hour/didn’t close my rings on my Apple Watch.
I need to start watching what I eat more - I will be in Hawaii at the end of the month and have to wear a bathing suit. I don’t know if I’ve done that in the last 2 years. Fortunately I haven’t gained weight during COVID, but still a “scary” thought.

I didn’t run a long one today, but I also went to the gym and have been learning a new exercise that I’ve stupidly avoided for a long time. It’s occasionally programmed, but I’ve avoided it. Just seemed like too much coordination and too many movements, but it’s actually very simple once you get the hang of it.

Essentially, it’s just getting up off the floor from a lying down position with weight in hand held above. Although you don’t need to perform it with a weight.

A full body workout, the Turkish Get Up:

I also rowed 2,000m plus some other core exercises, like glute ham raises. A light day for me.

Hey, it sounds like you are doing great!

I bet you will do great in any bathing suit. Says the lady who is at/near weight goal but can’t decide on what kind of new bathing suit. One piece paired with shorts works well in some situations, but also thinking about shorts with a swim top.

We do those but not all the way to standing. We do to the straight arm on the ground phase. I wonder whether they will graduate us. I hope not! :grimacing:

Played 90 minutes of pickup this AM and did the 1.75 miles there and 1 mile home for our route to/from dinner. Total step count for the day 16.4K

Two-week update: Down three pounds! Finally moving that needle.

BTW, this article on intermittent fasting is great in terms of being reader-friendly.

Another morning of more than 90 minutes of pickup. Weather is great today so I’m glad we got to play.

The weather is beautiful here in NoVA. Ran 8.5 with the training group.

It’s beautiful here too! I also ran this morning. I’m now up to a tad over 45 miles for the week and 6 days in a row. It’s been a long while since I’ve done that. Tomorrow is off and I’m very much looking forward to it. I also just got up from a two hour nap. I would say it was heavenly, but I had an awful nightmare about eating trail mixing and it broke all my teeth. Ugh

@ClassicMom98 - that’s some high mileage!

Thanks I’m pleased. Historically for me it’s not high, but this fall I wasn’t sure I’d be back. Everything has been improving a good deal this last month. One day this week it didn’t feel like I was running through quicksand! Baby steps
