Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

True… not just men. But I’ve just not known many women who ran in their 20s/30s. I have met many like me who took it up later in life.

My burpees were sooo bad in the fitness quiz that I’ve decided to do a few each day. At first I’m going to do them slowly and carefully, one leg at a time.

When I started at the work fitness center at age 38 (and then again more than 15 years later, the having regained the 15+ extra pounds), I was unable to do a simple jumping jack. Had to start out doing them one leg at a time. Thinking back on that I had to do a quick check today - PHEW, still fine on jumping jacks.

I personally think burpees are the most awkward and perhaps unhealthy movement for your knees/joints, etc.

Good tabata workout and pup walk before work this morning.

I hated burpees in gym class (we called them Squat Thrusts). I have decided that if I work my way up to doing some a few real ones now and then (to prove I can), I’ll do it with sneakers on. Usually I only have slippers/socks on at home.

So I actually like burpees. Regular burpees, burpees over the bar, burpee pull-ups. Love when those are programmed! Yes, I’m one of those!

I think part of my point is to say, don’t fret about meeting every “milestone” on a quiz/article/screening. Like children and developmental milestones, you may excel at some and lag behind on others. So many factors involved. You can still be a fitness bad a_s even if you can’t run a 12 minute mile or do a certain # of burpees!!! You still have bragging rights!!!

Or get up and down with the legs crossed. Nope. Didn’t attempt that one. Nothing that puts my knee at an awkward angle. I can get up and down without hands, but I ain’t trying them crossed.

The rest of them were not hard for me. But I also don’t like burpees. They are just awkward to me.

But I didn’t think hanging from a bar was a great measure of grip strength. Hanging isn’t a problem. My daily ab routine usually has me doing something hanging from a bar for 30-60 seconds, and often I do it with my chin above the bar. But open a jar? That’s what H is for. I just stomp into a room and thrust it at him, and he knows what to do. I consider myself to have a pretty bad grip…

I’m not a big fan of burpees, love to avoid them if possible. But burpees are a great all body & cardio exercise, if one is healthy enough for them not to hurt.

The burpees that I least like are the ones performed “over the rower,” which, when one is tired, one can easily trip jumping over the rower. I haven’t done that yet, but that’s always a worry.

Yesterday, I went in late to the gym for a “quick” 1-hour workout, which is pretty quick for me. I had to watch our local football team play and lose. Between sets of bench press, I did sets of ring dips and finished with a 30-minute treadmill run.

Indoor workout this morning. 2-3" of rain isn’t a big deal for this area, but I think we are supposed to get 3 of these storms in about a week. River just might flood. It’s been awhile - a long while. Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed about power, since the winds are to kick up later. Someone will lose it. A good chunk lost it yesterday - including Walmart - and it wasn’t even raining or windy then…

Anyhow - no run! I did 35 minutes stairmonster, followed by 40 minutes on the bike, then abs. After reporting about my hanging abs, I felt compelled to do the hanging bicycles with my chin above the bar, though if I’m really feeling tough, I’ll do pull-ups while doing the bicycles. That doesn’t happen often lol. Then back to the shed for week 2, day 2 - lower body. Both yesterday and today I increased my weights just a little. Felt good.

Impressed by those hanging bicycles!

Has anyone watched the Netflix documentary “You Are What You Eat” a twin study???

I haven’t finished yet…it’s only 4 episodes. It has turned out to be SOME about the twin study which I found interesting - follows identical twins (so, same genetic make up) through an 8 week food/exercise regime - one twin basically on a regular meat/dairy/etc diet the other twin on a vegan diet and measures how their bodies change in those 8 weeks in terms of weight but also fat %, muscle %, etc. THAT’S what I was interested in learning about (the research is through Stanford).

What I have found is that the a fair part of it is really about the terrible side of meat/dairy production and is pretty disturbing - and they spent a good bit of time on this - which I didn’t bargain for in watching it!

Anyway, thought I’d mention it here if you are looking for a quick watch…I still have to finish the last episode. Some good conversation about in it about how many people don’t consider fat vs muscle in weight loss and how losing weight through diet only can be devastating for muscle because people “diet” without including any fats - including healthy fats - and the diet reduces the necessary body muscle.

Sooo, I am still dealing with a yukky head old (thanks to the grandkids over the xmas holidays) and have also had the weird neurological incident that affected my dominant hand last week (am having it evaluated - thank heavens I know a neurologist who fit me in yesterday) but with those issues combined, I haven’t been back to the gym or take a walk outside (yukky, cold weather here) since I returned from skiing Dec. 30. That said, I’ve had no appetite from the head cold so have benefited from that and continued to drop weight. No complaints there! Not the best diet plan, but I’ll take it! My original goal last fall was to lose weight to fit into my ski clothes (which I did) but have lost additional weight since we left for the ski trip 2.5 weeks ago! I am now 11 lbs lower than I was when I met my DH 40 yrs ago! I do hope to eventually feel better and get back to the gym, but for now, this is ok by me

Hope you haven’t loss any muscle mass!!!

I have no idea what I weighed when I met my husband. Does that # matter? Your body is (probably) so different now in terms of metabolism, muscle tone, etc.

Hope you feel better soon so you can get back to your routine. Being sick is no fun - and generally not good nourishment for your body! But sick happens.

I just happen to remember what I weighed before the trip where I met my husband.
And while I hope I haven’t lost muscle mass, I haven’t exercised in in 2 weeks. But I’ll get back when I can.

I watched the teaser on Netflix. For 2 months, one twin eats a vegan diet and the other twin eats meat/dairy. I didn’t watch it, at least yet, because the results seem obvious.

I’ve been “banging that drum” for a long time. One’s diet and strength training should or must go hand in hand. TOFI, thin outside, fat inside.

My data set is ONE, me. About a year ago, I think, I was trying to get to a lower weight class for competing. I dropped 5-6 lbs, which for me, is a lot.

I mentioned it on this thread, but at that time, I did a DEXA scan. While I lost body fat % overall, I also lost muscle mass as well. And I exercise 24/7/365 (hyperbole). It goes without saying, but I was disappointed with the results.

IMO, muscle mass as we age is more important than the overall body fat %. So, I put those 5-6 lbs back on. :grinning:

That’s a good reminder. But perhaps because my Dad is in PT now after hip repair surgery… the idea of losing any range of motion is bothersome. I’ve never liked burpees, but I used to be able to do them. They’ll never be a big part of my exercise routine, but I like the idea of being cable of doing them… and jumping jacks too.

For me, while I hope to get back to eating more when I feel better, right now I am enjoying the weight loss! I just have no appetite right now and its hard to be sure I eat enough. I had tomato soup for lunch and then took a big spoonful of peanut butter but I just couldn’t eat any more. This won’t last. Might as well “enjoy” it while it does

Yesterday’s consumption was some very yummy (and high fat) Costco cape cod chicken salad at lunchtime and a teriyaki stir fry udon (with extra chicken and vegetables added). Ate as much as I could of each.

To be honest, since it was at Stanford (Calif), I expect to see your face pop up on the screen as one of the “experts”!!!
