Um, I going to skip that! lol
In good news, I think I figured out the soreness on my left side, from hip to lower leg. All my walking and running has been on a treadmill because of allergies. I am paranoid about falling so I usually hold on. It occurred to me that I almost always hold on with my left hand so my right arm can swing as that’s where I wear my Apple watch. I think holding on like this is changing my gait and causing the problem. Hope problem is mostly solved.
Yep, skinny fat is definitely a thing - particularly as you get older!
Unfortunately, it shouldn’t be a thing.
With muscle loss, you’ll:
But you’ll be skinny, though w/o tone.
That news I like.
What I meant, sushiritto, is that ‘it’s a thing if you don’t take action.’ Been lifting progressively heavier weights for 6 months (and encouraging my friends to do same), watching form videos, eating a lot more protein, etc.
Admittedly, despite the health benefits, it was appearance that initially motivated me. Got to lower weight but did not look like I did in HS lol. I can see the changes now and focusing on the strength world has made me appreciate all the dimensional benefits beyond appearance.
Thanks for all the squat promotion here!! lol
Yes, I agree improving muscles, core strength etc important as we get older. Mostly for good health, but partly to not look like a scrawny old lady.
Leaving New Zealand in 2 days. Today was supposed to be an awesome hike - Tongariro Crossing - best day hike in NZ and top 10 in world. BUT, the weather is bad and they had to cancel for today and tomorrow. It was to be one of the highlights of our trip, so I’m bummed, but you can’t control the weather. We did a couple of other hikes. On one we should have had great views of Mt. Doom from Lord of the Rings, but it was so cloudy we could only see parts of it.
I have to remind myself we had really good weather most of our trip, and didn’t have to ride our bikes in the rain at all. Our guides said some people come on the bike trip and don’t see much of the sun for the entire 14 days.
And, we have avoided the worst of winter in the mid-Atlantic.
Hopefully you can focus on what you DID and not what you couldn’t do - for a nice long trip like you’ve had I guess weather is bound to play a factor at some point!
Safe travels home.
Or a scrawny old man.
We are back home. This trip was fun overall, and most of the time I got plenty of exercise, but on some long driving days and with the long flight home, some days I just didn’t have it in me to worry about it.
First morning home I went to play pickleball for 2 hours.
Welcome home! That’s a lot to get up and dive right back in after that long flight!
Welcome home!
Ds1 did study abroad in NZ and so wanted to take his wife there for a honeymoon but Covid. (She is so well-traveled, and this was a place she hadn’t been). Well, they finally got to go last year and they also missed out on the day they most wanted on the south island. It involved some kind of boat or plane trip to some place with penguins, but the weather was too bad. I was SO BUMMED for them, because ds loves penguins. But they still had a great trip staying with his host mom on the north island and tooling around there and then time doing all the adventure things down south.
I didn’t see any penguins, but I was hoping to.
We also missed our helicopter/glacier hike activity bc of weather, but I’d done something similar in Canada, so wasn’t as bummed about that.
We got to do plenty, and we avoided some of winter at home. It was a good trip.
Yet again, I’m left feeling a little bit like Sisyphus.
Attempted a clean & jerk PR, a nice big round number yesterday, and failed. Just like my deadlift, I get so close to that big round number and fail.
I got the barbell up to my shoulders and just couldn’t muster the strength to even get it off my shoulders let alone overhead.
All I can do is keep trying, but that biological time clock is running out.
Finished with a 1 mile time trial run, rest 5 mins, and then 15 mins (a fast 5 calories, rest remaining minute) on the air bike.
Long run planned today.
Sometimes you’ve got to look at all you did/can do. It’s so much more than others. But keep trying!
I keep telling myself, it’s “just a number.” But I think I’m psyching myself out.
If I were a specialist in one discipline, then I think I’d do much better.
People always ask me, are you going to run a marathon, and I tell people, I’d have to devote more or all my time to running and then I couldn’t lift nearly as much or at all. So no. I won’t run one.
But for these failures, I think I have found a happy equilibrium between the strength training and running.
I think your body is better off with a blend of activities. It’s so easy to just lean all in to cardio for example - the blend is super beneficial.
Hey, it’s not always about getting to the destinations. Your journey of trying to get up that hill, is a good thing - keep up your efforts.
