Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

The NYT had a piece on joint replacement and obesity today. Some interesting stats on the risks. Gift link: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/04/health/obesity-bmi-joint-replacements.html?unlocked_article_code=1.IU4.K0gS.9g11wLvqgiFy&smid=url-share

We are in San Francisco for a few days. Yesterday I think we walked 10 miles, and today we hiked and walked 15 miles. We took a ferry to Angel Island and hiked up and down the “mountain” there, plus walked the entire perimeter of the island. We also walked to and from the ferry, and to a Trader Joe’s. Tomorrow is biking day. It’s going to be windy when we bike across the Golden Gate Bridge. BUT, the day after tomorrow they are saying there may be 35 MPH gusts, so seems like tomorrow is the better day.

Tonight I was finally able to on the roster for the Beginner/AdvancedBeginner drills session run by our local pickleball club ($25/year). One of my regular buddies was also able to get off the wait list. So much good coaching, fun playing. About 16 players and a team of instructors (one is from my neighborhood - our kids went to school together). Allergies and sinus congestion have kept me from running much, but I did not want to miss this event. Signed up for next Monday.

Still in San Francisco. Yesterday we rode our bikes across Golden Gate Bridge and over 30 miles, plus walked several miles. Today we walked over 11 miles. Tomorrow we head to wine country. We likely won’t get as much exercise there.

This is so interesting! It’s laughable but also I bet happens to the best of us! I’m going to PT now for a sciatic type pain and a shoulder issue - maybe I have/had dead butt syndrome!

Got a call yesterday telling me that my doctor had an opening in her schedule and can I have surgery on November 1st? I sure can! The timing actually works out very well for me. Hoping I can resume running in January 2025.

Checking in. The biggest bummer is that 2 weeks ago I caught COVID again. Other than feeling tired the symptoms weren’t too awful.

I’m still struggling to find the rhythm for the fall. I had to go to the office 3 days week which disrupted any patterns.

I’ve been doing lots of traveling, which means my weight has gone up. Last trip of the year is this week. Excited to stay home for a bit and shed some of this weight.

After my last 4 mile run, I developed tendonitis on my foot. At my age, it’s probably best to suspend running for a while and re-activate my gym membership.

I haven’t weighed in since 8/17. Sadly my Mom passed on 8/23 and my world got turned upside down. I got back to exercising the day after Labor Day. I will weigh in on this Saturday.

Planning on increasing the weights a ton on 10/1. Most likely it will be cardio everyday before work then 4 nights of weights a week. Definitely will have to add more protein to the diet.

My long-term fitness goals are this:
20 min 5K
25 reps of own bodyweight bench press
12 pull-ups
Lastly, to look good.

All done within two weeks of each other. It will probably take me 9-10 months to get to those goals.

Sorry for the loss of your mom.

20 min 5k? Is that a typo? These days I am happy to be under 40min, though not running often enough for a good success rate there. My daughter used to run 5k in about 25 min, which impressed me.

I’m sorry for your loss as well.

All those goals would put you in an elite group. Good luck!

(How about all those goals on the same day, consecutively ? :grinning: push, pull and legs are fresh)

I’m sorry about your mom  Take care of yourself emotionally during this time!

Yes a 20 minute 5k would be like a 6.5 minute mile! Something off there??

Using a strength calculator, a 25-rep bodyweight bench press would one’s 1-rep max bench press at 350-400 lbs. +/-. That’s a SOLID bench press. And run a 20-min 5K? Wow, that would be AMAZING!

FWIW, the NFL tests the best college football players at the NFL Combine with 225 lbs on the bar. And the best non-lineman (i.e., lighter players), like WR’s and S’s can get 20 +/- reps at 225.

The 49ers rookie safety Malik Mustapha at 209 lbs got 22 reps at 225 lbs. He was #1 in the bench press for the S’s. 49ers fan here!

I used to be able to do one of those goals regularly, I think at my best I could do a second. The benching. I could bench my weight once and I was happy with that.

Nowadays I’d be thrilled with a 21 min 5K. 22 I would hope I could do still. Sigh…

I am very sorry for your loss

Sorry for the loss of your mom.

I think you are smart to realize that it will take 9-10 months to reach your goals.
A 20min 5K is wicked fast! Apparently an under 30min 5K is very good for amateurs.
Keep moving!

I will be seeing my PT tomorrow to discuss prehab for the surgery. Currently I continue with walking, yoga, barre and dance. I am considering trying a new class which combines yoga, strength and cardio. A friend takes the class and says the cardio can be done low impact which is what I can do right now. The strength part works larger muscles than the barre classes.

I have never really understood what “barre” included. I saw a short video the other day and was surprised! Looked interesting.

Continuing the PT talk, I’m in the midst of my first ever PT work. Initially for both sciatic and a shoulder (impingement?) now just really for the shoulder. 1 hour 2x weekly. We just added on a couple more weeks this morning so I’ll be going through mid October. While I don’t love doing the exercises at home , I have a lot of respect for the process and the knowledge PT’s have!

Otherwise I’m continuing with HIIT type videos at home, lots of walking, occasional short runs and for another week or so 15-20 mins of “shake out” swimming after work. I’ll really miss that when we close the pool soon!

So sorry for your loss.

Goals are great to have, but sometimes you just have to take things day by day. I hope you enjoy the journey.

The last time I got in serious shape many moons ago I was weighing 163 and did 22 reps at 165. A few months later I ran a 5K at 21:39. I didn’t attempt the pullups. I am not sure I was in that good of shape in HS.

The more I ran the more I was impressed with the HS kids that do a 5K in 15 or 16 mins.
