Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I’d like to have both. I just think having both is a bit insane.

With regards to the post with the IG link, she’s doing chin-ups not pull-ups. Chin-ups are performed with a supinated grip (palms facing you). Pull-ups are done with a pronated grip (palms facing away).

Different muscles worked.

Anything endorsed by Attia is off the table for me.

Weighted vests distribute the weight closer to the body, both back and front, making the added weight feel more natural. An improperly sized and fitted backpack can wreck the spine.

Bunsen - why do you not like Attia? I’ve been listening to his podcasts and they seem really interesting. Of course he is covering such a broad swath of information there is no way he can be on top of it all (same issue with Huberman, lol).

He seems kinda legit to me - curious your take…?

PS now I’m worried about my spine, dragging my backpack up 9 flights at work all the time. Thanks for tip

With the Ruck, it’s all about posture. Keep the correct posture and you’re fine. Bad posture and you may get back issues.

The one thing I do like about the backpack or Ruck is the chest is exposed to air. And the vest is not. So, you may sweat more with a vest in front.

I would take a guy who pumps some questionable longevity “drugs” and makes $$ off those recommendations with a BIG grain of salt.

For us females, walking with a bare chest would create a lot of trouble  Many weighted vests do not fit average female body for the same reasons.

You know what I meant. :grinning:

As for fitting them, my 5.11 is very adjustable with various straps, wires and such.

Hmmm… it does seem like these longevity gurus are always promoting something (Dave Asprey is the extreme). It just seemed like Attia was a little more restrained than most and seemed to be a bit more thoughtful and measured in his commentary. Guess that doesn’t make all his positions/endorsements correct!

I do love his Centurion Decathlon idea (i.e., work hard now to be as strong, fit, flexible, and capable as you possibly can - so you have a good shot of retaining some of that in your 70s/80s/90s). It’s changed my attitude about fitness a good bit (strong instead of skinny).

Haven’t bought any products tho! lol

Send all your excess energy my way please.
We leave for our hard bike trip tomorrow, and start riding Sunday (Sunday is a shorter ride than normal). I usually only look forward to these trips, but this one has me a little stressed.

I actually purchased his book recently, but haven’t started reading it yet.

Last winter I listened to Peter Attlia’s “Outlive” book, audio version.
Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity - New Book by Peter Attia

Much of it was interesting (though some parts too involved). I also liked the Centurian Decathalon idea. I don’t recall any sales pitches.

My biotech researchers friends laugh at the rapamycin scam these longevity gurus keep propagating. Sadly, this is the American way: pop a pill and be miraculously cured of old age issues.

No excess energy to give, I’m beat, work and exercise. :slightly_smiling_face:

But I wish you a wonderful, easy, no sweat bike trip. Remember, your body has the ability to go beyond what you think your body is capable of. I personally believe that I have another 30% in reserve (e.g., the gas gauge goes below the “E”) than I think I have.

Your mind can hold you back. The brain can stop you. Push beyond your thoughts.

Exactly.

Have a great trip 1214mom! Sending energy your way.

This may not be relevant (given your goals) but could you have a great time even if you were at the back of the pack?

Hope it all works out! Enjoy the experience, and please give us a trip report once back home.

Yes - we will be fine at the back of the pack. Actually, when we went to NZ and did a bike trip where they tried to keep us all pretty close together, we preferred to be at the back of the pack, so people wouldn’t “tail gate” for example. I just don’t want to be holding people up, if that makes any sense. (If we’re all supposed to be done so we can move on to another activity, and we’re still miles out kind of thing).

Good luck, 1214mom!
