Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Well, that is part of the reason I asked if you carried a phone. And since you don’t that indicates that you don’t want to be bothered during your runs. (As you mentioned!) So with a cellular Garmin you could get the fitness info you want AND have a way for someone to track you if needed for safety.

An Apple Watch (I think) ties you more to activity/movement/quantity of fitness - there is the expectation that you will try and close your rings daily. I don’t think you want that type of tracking - you don’t need it, you have fitness built into your lifestyle.

So the Garmin watch can be just that, a watch. Or it can be a fitness tracker just to the degree that you want it to be. If I understand one correctly!

I love my Apple Watch but I also love the “game” of meeting my goals. THAT is part of my lifestyle.

And one more thing - I always carry my phone with me on fitness activities BUT that doesn’t mean I am looking at it or talking on it! I avoid those because my time out is MY time. But safety first for me.

Finally! A nice enough day for an outside bike ride…only my 3rd since Jan. 1. H and I did 13 miles along the coast today. It was 45 and bright and sunny with NO real wind…heavenly!

Interesting read, thank you for the post.

Being the opinionated person that I am, I don’t know if I’d put it in the Top 5, but the Turkish Get-up is an excellent exercise with or w/o weight. Laying flat on the floor and then getting up off the floor works a lot of muscles, but Top 5? Not IMO.

I used to run a lot back when I was in shape in '12 & '13, I carried my phone in a fanny pack to listen to music. I never liked tracking my time while running. I ran by feel mostly.

I did like running outside. My philosophy was it was hard to quit the run if you are 3 miles from home. You might as well finish it to get home quicker.

I got a Garmin for Christmas to replace my Fitbit. I added “soccer” as an activity and was amused to see that the GPS tracked my movement during the game. In just over 90 minutes, it said I ran 2.8 miles. I’ve attached the GPS plot because it amuses me (spot the times I chased down balls that left the field  )

Geez, do you play all 11 positions?:man_running:

If you already have an iPhone I’d suggest the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The major downside, based on what you’ve shared, is the connection to your phone which could contribute to unwanted distractions while working out. Another downside could be battery life vs. a watch like a Garmin(especially solar versions), but charging every other day isn’t exactly a hardship.

We were playing 7 v7 with no goalie so lots of movement. In an ideal world, folks play 1/2 time up and 1/2 back on defense

Hopefully with Pugg nets.

Yesterday was Bownets (like Puggs but square) . I think the ones yesterday were 4 feet high by 6 feet wide.

Fun story. The name PUGG is an acronym for “pick-up-game-goal” and adult pick-up was the original market

When I play on Tuesday nights we usually play about the same width but youth size goals (6X18) with keepers. Everyone takes a 4 or 5 minute shift in goal per half.

As the dad of a GK I wish more teams would do that to provide a window into what GKs see and deal with.

I’ve never done a Turkish Get-up all the way to standing. I need to give it a try. We do them from lying down to up on one arm. Standing sounds challenging.

ETA: I also refuse to do burpees and inchworms. Too must stress on my wrist. When the trainer does those I do mountain climbers or tin mans.

Sometimes I have slight hip pain and wonder whether to blame pickleball. Well I felt it today on airport shuttle bus at end of a trip… after 2 weeks without PB (and not much walking). Today I’ll blame it on luggage logistics. The situation does support my theory that NOT moving is worse for my body than the variety of activities I normally do. Also a reminder to get back to stretching videos, skipped during vacation.

I think it was Strava my DIL used when we played pickleball, and it looked quite similar.

Most of the tracking apps will give you that fun map. I was a diehard RunKeeper user for years and I loved seeing the shape (or not!) if my runs.

Last night was more proof that punk shows count as exercise. Lots of high heart rate and someplace around 7k of steps

Glad that pickleball is (mostly) in the clear as possible cause of hip pain as you seem to have a really good time with those PB games! :grinning:
