Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

My first guess is IT Band. Pain can pop up in either the outside knee or outside hip area. You can google stretches for them. It’s probably easier than trying to explain them. Piriformis also possible (in the back). The deep glute stretch in your video is good for that. And the others seemed to all be good generic stretches

Thanks for the great input @Embracethemess & @ClassicMom98!

Perhaps I would not pay too much attention to the hip pain. (Usually it’s in bed, and often I can adjust position to make it go away). But… mom had osteoperosis, and in her later years hip pain kept her from gardening. Also she used “two-step” method when she needed to do stairs instead of the normal method.

I wonder if it’s arthritis. Often doesn’t bother a person during the day but more pronounced at night in bed.

That’s a thought too. For years I thought H just wasn’t stretching and had hip pain. nope. Arthritis… But his hurt all the time, especially after squatting days. I rarely think of that, because all of my aches and pains are soft tissue related.

Hmm… yes arthritis could be a possibility. (Sometimes I feel a bit achy when I’ve NOT been moving.). But probaby in combination with other muscular stuff too? Sometimes the front of my left leg feels a bit tired.

That’s an impressive streak of over 250 days, which is no small feat! Life can definitely throw curveballs, but even if the streak ends, the consistency and dedication you’ve shown are what really count. Hope the trip goes well, rain or not.

Thanks - wow, that is an old post. I actually made it up to 500 days! Then my watch broke AND I sprained my foot, so didn’t exercise for a couple of days. But I am keeping up with getting a fair amount of exercise a couple of years later. I retired in 2021, and decided exercise would be a big part of my retirement life. So far it’s working. i figure I keep moving so I can keep moving :).

I had some active days. Yesterday I ran in the morning, did 2 hr pickleball drill class in the evening, outdoors - perfect weather though we had feared maybe rain. In between there was a nice nap  This morn played 7am pickleball and was surprised that only our two courts were used, 4 others empty until another group showed up about 8am. Late this afternoon I did a 2 hour volunteer gig that involves a lot of lifting and walking. Yep, nap today too.

You want to see JMU empty? Run in the summer on a Saturday morning at 6am. On the east campus I saw nobody - not a car, not a person. The only people I saw on the other side were construction workers getting an early start on a roof. It was very peaceful! I ran around 7 miles. We met younger S/Gf and GF’s family last night. Today older S and FDIL are coming. It should be a very nice weekend.

And ! It was only a muggy 68* this morning. Still 30* more than is prefer, but 10+ degrees better than its been in the morning. Still sweat like a demon and my clothes are hanging up in the room. Hopefully they will dry some before tomorrow.m
Edit - that was younger S’s awful old dorm - that he wound up loving - on the left. Hence I snapped the picture. Also I use pictures as my prof of life to H when I’m out running in strange places

Longish injury story-- In December my primary care doctor found a small umbilical hernia. Her advice was to ignore it unless it grew or caused pain.

Two weeks ago while playing soccer I got weird pains in my lower abdomen. It didn’t feel like anything I’d felt before. I freaked out because of the hernia and went to Dr. She referered me to a surgical consult,

The surgeon figured out that it wasn’t hernia but tearing of old scar tissue from when I had my appendix out 50 years ago. I probably did it when I accelerated while making a cut move.

I played last night without pain but am feeling pretty sore this AM :frowning:

So odd!

Well at least you know it was not an appendix issue  (I just came from visiting a friend, who was complaining about left side pain. Gave her a mini lecture to pay heed to it, go to urgent care if needed.) Hope you have continued progress healing.

Here’s a “it’s a good idea to be a very regular exerciser” story.

I’ve talked about the 90 y.o. lady at our gym who walks on the treadmill every day for an hour at 3.5mph at 15% grade. I’ve never seen her speak to anyone at the gym (but us), but over the past several months, she’s become H’s favorite member. He always speaks to her - English is not her native language, so she’s hard to understand, not to mention she’s 90! She drives every day about 30 miles to the gym. She is widowed with no children. She has mentioned she doesn’t go back to her homeland, because all of her relatives are deceased.. But she never misses the gym… until a couple of weeks ago she did…

She missed several days. H, of course noticed, as he always looks forward to seeing her. When she did come back, he spoke to her and she just seemed confused. She still got her TM. Concerned, H wrote her a note asking her to speak to him before she left. She got off the TM immediately. H asked if she was OK. She didn’t seem herself. She said she didn’t know. A “friend” had brought her to the gym and would be back in 2 hours.

Long story short - the friend was a stranger who who buys ugly houses. She called him wanting to sell her house. When he got there, he found her in a house with no running water or AC - when temps have been in the heat indices of 100-115, but she has no money to fix it! She lives on $1000/month social security. So he took her home with him, and she had been staying on his couch - refusing to use a spare BR, because she wanted to be closer to him and was tired of being alone.

He didn’t know what to do with her - so I gave him (via H) the number for social services. That got the ball rolling for enrolling her in medicaid. A policeman later called H at the gym asking what happened. He was going to do a wellness check. I’m not exactly sure what all that happened next, but now she is staying with someone the house guy knows who takes care of elderly people in a home setting. But now she lives about 1:30 away. We were able to speak to her on the phone a few days ago and she sounded good and happy. And supposedly the woman will bring her by the gym in a couple of weeks to say hello, and she has to bring her to town for a doctor’s appointment.

Anyhow, a wild story. But if H hadn’t been paying attention, followed up, and connected the guy to social services, who knows what would have happened. And if the man hadn’t brought her home with him, I’m sure she would have died. And who would have known? She has no close neighbors. It’s so sad. I’m not sure it’s a happy ending now, but it could have been much worse.

Y’all are good people. I’m so glad your dh got involved and that the ugly-house guy was a good dude.

You and your husband are my heroes for the day.

Someone needs to get that woman a gym membership closer to where she is staying! Does her Medicaid plan have silver sneakers?!

That is a wild story. So glad it worked out. The world needs more people like you and your H.

That reminds me of a story and meals on wheels emergency contacts. I’ll post it on the caring for parentst thread.

Most definitely. At first we were skeptical of him. But he did call social services himself to get the ball rolling, and did the interviews, etc… he did also mention - he texts H - that she said he was the second person she called about the house. The first person just left. He said he couldn’t do it. It was unlivable.

And we have the place’s new phone number and can call. And she sounds good the other day. So I’m just hoping it will be ok. I doubt she will see another gym though and that makes me sad.

I also wonder who is listed as her emergency contact at her doctors office. But they of course wouldn’t tell us.

I know you’re not looking for kudos of any kind, it’s “just what you do.” It is so good to hear there are still genuinely good people in the world, who will look out for the people who need it. This story brought tears to my eyes.
