Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Good for you! That’s a great goal!

I may or may not have also signed up for something in October - shorter than yours. I had these grand plans my kids would watch, but then younger S made older S’ bachelor party that weekend across the country. lol. I’m still planning to run, but we will see.

I hope you still do it! We can cheer each other on virtually!

As long as I’m not sick or injured, I’ll do it. Of course I had hoped to run a 5K in April as a “get my feet wet” race, but I strained a hamstring in Feb and running fast was out of the question for a month. But longer mid distance races are easier on me in some ways. I don’t have any raw speed. God forgot to give me any fast twitch muscle fibers. :joy:

I have never had protein powder. TBH-- idea grosses me out

My Dad lived til 97 and he was super active til about 92.

When I was in NYC last weekend (last business trip!) I walked ~100+ street blocks and more than a few avenue blocks on my first day. From 7th and 30th up to the Met, then over to somewhere in the 90s and 1st Ave before heading back down.

I’ve officially retired and every day I’m getting in gym classes (2 today!) or long walks. Once tonight’s rain storm passes through I’ll try to get in a 20-30 minute walk.

Congrats on your retirement @Mom22039 !

Thank you! It’s fun to be part of a new group — and I’m excited to see what’s next.

Congratulations on your retirement, and welcome to the group. I retired in 2021, and I made exercise an important part of my daily routine. I’m now 4 years in and continue to try and get a fair amount of exercise most every day.

Most mornings, when I make pancakes, I add a scoop of whey protein. I also add a mixture of seeds, including hemp seed, which have almost as much protein as soybeans.

Additionally, I use PB2 protein powder for smoothies as @abasket does. Creatine supplementation is also popular with some gym goers.

I have nothing on the schedule coming up, but I’m looking around, whether it’s a 1/2 marathon or another lifting meet.

I decided to weigh on Saturday. Under the same conditions I did when I was trying to lose weight, which is post workout. I came in at 159.0lb. My low was 155.0lb which I held for probably 5 minutes.

Overall I feel stronger than I did back in Feb’25. Although I have a left bi-cep issue nagging me. I am starting to do more circuit training instead of pure weight-lifting. Mainly it is a time issue. But my gym has an outdoor area with turf to workout on. Nice to get some Vit D.

On vacation. But thought of this group at Homewood Suites breakfast buffet. At the oatmeal, in addition the usual nut and raisins they had flax seeds. But also they had prepared glasses of overnight oats and chia pudding

I also sprinkle some flaxseeds on my dog’s breakfast. She enjoys it too.:slightly_smiling_face:

We have been on vacation this week, a house on Lake Huron in Canada.:canada: Myself, husband, our 3 kids and their partners and 2 pups.

I love that every morning each person chooses a form of movement that they want to do before we have a mid morning breakfast and head to the beach. Bike. Run. Walk. Walk the dogs. Yoga. Fitness videos.

Don’t worry we eat enough to make up for it lol

New weight loss tool-- dental aligners
My dentist convinced me to do a dental alignment to fix issues that I’d always thought of as cosmetic but she made the case that there were some functional issues that needed to be fixed (the miracle of 3d modeling).

Since I have to keep them in except when eating and taking them off/on is a pain, I find myself snacking less.

I guess you run and walk a million miles, you gain some experiences.

I was going to report Friday afternoon, I saw the officer downstairs at the workplace and asked if that kid picked up the wallet I found during a long run. And he did! That made me happy.

This morning I set out for my Sunday morning walk grumbling. It felt like a tropical jungle out there. I was sweating buckets. My shirt would have been drier if I took a shower with it on. But suck it up. You can do it. People have it much worse.

I was 3 minutes from my house when an elderly man was trying to ask me something. I thought he wanted to know the time - I get asked this from time to time. So I took out my ear buds. No. He was asking if I would call 911. Absolutely. So I sat with him. He was extremely difficult to understand. I was able to get his name and age. He was only 75. But apparently whoever he was living with kicked him out of his house and he started crying. Goodness I felt terrible. I stayed with him until the officer came and helped relay the information I knew. The officer was having trouble understanding him too. And I had H bring him a Gatorade since he said he was thirsty. When I left the officer had him in the back of his cruiser with the AC on. The man was dressed in a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Poor man. I hope his life improves.

You continue to be an awesome athlete and human being.

That poor man. In this world today, be thankful he saw you as a safe person to stop and ask for help.

I couldn’t be a social worker or policeman. These things affect me too much. I don’t reflect too much during the day, but at night, it hits hard. We all say we are grateful, blah blah blah… but are we really? If you have a bed, don’t have to be worry about being attacked/shot/etc., and have enough to eat… you’re doing fine. There are just so many people out there that don’t have the above, more than most people realize.

On a lighter note, I often laugh at why people always come to me asking for this or that. At work, often outside the building, I get asked “where is X, Y, or Z” at least 3xweek, if not a lot more. How does anyone know I work there? I don’t dress professionally. I wear a solid t-shirt (mostly from Walmart) and stretchy pants. I have no badge, etc. I wouldn’t say I’m the most approachable looking person. I’m happy to help, and almost always I can, but it is strange! Why me out of everyone else milling about?

I semi-wimped out today. I did my long run exclusively on the TM. Can’t remember the last time I did that. 14 miles done, but it is easier on the TM. Felt OK, except I bruised my big toenail. That didn’t feel awesome the last 30 min. These 74-76* dewpoints will be the death of me. 70* is extreme in my book, and every degree above, the misery factor increases exponentially.

On vacation, and today’s window of opportunity on vacation to run was short. I went about 2k. But back at “home” I later had time to walk and stretch. Tis a good day.

Learning to focus on what I actually DO accomplish because more and more friends/family are aging to the point that they are not as active.
