Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Yes. I work with students with autism. Although we rarely need to use what is taught in the class, we need to get recertified every year.

I’ve really been enjoying pickleball (learned last summer) and have not been running as much in the past year. But today after my usual Fri 7am PB play, I realized the weather was just perfect for a run…. 59 degrees, totally overcast (nice since my usual trail has little shade). And I was already in need of a shower. Also had good stretching session plus another video with hand weights. It’s nice being retired

Just doing my thing…

Playing PB 3 times a week, riding my bike (less than I should be, given we’re doing a bike trip to Switzerland and France in less than a month) and walking the dog the last 2 weeks.

Nice day of activity!

I gotta put a plug in for the non-retired though. While time is one factor in getting fitness in, motivation is probably a bigger factor. I’m semi-retired now but I have for years MADE the time for fitness. And very often more than one activity a day.

Weird jumbled up run for me this morning. Our area is having its first big race today. Even in the day, no way would I race a long run in the south in early Sept. Heat, humidity, hills and also peak ragweed. Death sentence for me.

Funny I never thought too much how much such things impact the residents - until you live on the race course and they restrict parking from 6pm the day before until 1pm today. And we’re locked in our house from 6am-1pm today.

And of course this is when older S/FDIL are visiting and had to leave this morning. They didn’t shut down the road until 6am, so they planned to leave then. All of this messed up my usual going to the gym routine. So I ran moderately hard for 7 miles - stopping along the way to text to kids to get the status of their departure. Came back to say goodbye and see them off, then went out for 4 more miles also stopping to text the other S who’s flying back from Europe and flight was delayed and panicking about the connecting flight.

So the miles got done, but very disjointed and start/stop like. When I finished my clothes weighed 5 pounds and left puddles on the floor. Can’t imagine running hard for more than double the distance on a day like today. Also after I stopped I did my Duolingo and when I got up, I was so dizzy I thought I’d faint. Kept feeling dizzy until I ate a bunch of sugar. I only drank water while running because it didn’t feel like I was really doing that much with all the stops. Ugh. Summer blows though I admit this August has been the best I can remember. And next week looks good, minus the ragweed. Just this weekend is the normal Blech.

edit - I do admit it is sort of neat seeing the runners. It’s not a big race. Maybe 1000 between the two races. And we are at mile 4.5 and 25 along the course. It will be interesting to see how they look in a couple hours lol.

Hope you bounce back quick! Even our bodies like routines and hate when they get messed up!

We have a race go by our house a couple times a year. I love, love to be outside cheering them on!

I sat down by the street for an hour. It’s too hot for me. The porch is better. My street has been the main drag for 5Ks for years but nothing that has shut down the road all day.

it has been funny though. My town is NOT a running town. And everyone who talks about it keeps saying “this is a Boston qualifier! How amazing is that to have here!” Umm. You’d be hard pressed to find a road marathon that isn’t a Boston qualifier. And if can qualify on this course today, you can qualify probably anywhere. Our city is not flat. And the worst 200 foot hill comes at mile 24 and 11 (half). And no shade and heat with a 72* dewpoint.

3 men and 2 women made the open BQ times by my count. Hard to know about the age groups

I’m a special ed. teacher. Three of my kids want to run cross country this year (usually it’s only one). Each one requires a 1:1 support per their IEPs. Despite very challenging behaviors, my kids are universally loved in the school, so there is usually no problem getting teachers to volunteer to run with them, however, three teachers willing to give up 3-4 days after school per week is a tall ask. So… guess who is now going to be running. Yep, the girl who always swore she wouldn’t run unless chased by a bear (or having to chase a student).

One of the kids runs a 7 minute mile, one is a bit slower, but would run forever if you didn’t turn her around to go back to the school, and the third hates to run (signed up by mom) and runs like Ed Grimley. Guess who I’ve picked as my running buddy  .

7 minute mile… wowser. It’s a rare day when I can run a 7 min kilometer (8 min is my typical pace… 13 min/mile).

He’s super fast, and he came back this year a couple of inches taller. All in his legs. Usually it’s the coach that runs with him as few can keep up. His parents now have to split 5Ks while running with him (one runs that first half, one runs the second) as they can’t keep up his pace. He runs in some competitive races. I’m not sure how they factor in his running with support into his standings for school races, but for 5Ks he usually comes into school on Monday with a medal for his age group (he’s just started 8th grade) to show us.
He always chooses “rest” as his break activity, and I’m not surprised. His parents are wonderful and have him out kayaking, bouldering, climbing, skiing, running, biking, or rollerblading on the weekends. Sometimes all of them within one weekend. Along with museum visits and other cultural activities. I could never keep up with his lifestyle. He’s tired by the time Monday rolls around.

I’m the slowest/worst runner ever. I had my co-workers rolling yesterday when I admitted that my “running” pace is actually slower than my walking pace. While I have dreams about running like a beautiful thoroughbred or gazelle, I actually move like a hippo. My little Ed Grimley and I are going to be quite the pair at cross-country practice.

Crossed off a bucket list item for me. I’ve long wanted to hike McAfee’s Knob. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail. But it’s 4 miles each way (1900’ gain). Waiting for H to agree to do it probably wasn’t going to happen. Plus I didn’t want to on a weekend when it’s so crowded and you have to take a shuttle from 30 min away.

so my early bday present was to take the day off work. Left at 6am to get to the trail around 8:15. Figured on 2-3 hours each way like the reviews said, especially since I wasn’t expecting it to be so rocky and rooty. Not sure why I thought it’d be more groomed. It is the AT! But I am super slow on rocks. So I was surprised I made it up in 1:30. Down took a little longer. I tripped about 57 times but no falls. If I ever hike something like this again, especially solo, I’ll get hiking poles. My ankles just have no mobility. I was happy I was only passed by 1 guy running with his dog. And I had the summit completely to myself!!

Good Morning! I haven’t posted much about myself here in the past few months as it has been a rather rough time.

But I am leaning into fitness and am into a new routine. Continuing with my yoga practice 3-4x/ week. I also continue to walk as much as possible and am amping up my pace. Still on the fence about whether to return to running again. That could be an entirely separate post.

I started a strength and weight lifting class 2x/week about 3 weeks ago. It’s a small group of women friends and a fantastic trainer. The others in the class started about a year ago but everyone is friendly and encouraging. That is the atmosphere in which I perform best.

The lifting is very interesting to me as it is something I never before saw myself as doing. Light hand weights- yes, but this is heavier weights and things like bench presses and back squats ( didn’t even know what that was until this class). I started out with an empty bar, and 3 weeks later I have added an additional 15 pounds. I have a goal in mind and at the rate I am going it will take several months to reach it. But I’m moving in the right direction.

I love reading this. I’m so sorry for all you’ve been through and going through, but I am glad you’ve connected with a good group of women to lift with! You’re already making great progress!

That’s great, FallGirl! Good to focus on your well-being at this time - especially in a supportive group of other women. :yellow_heart:

That’s great! Keep up the good work.

I have considered taking a lifting/weights class at rec center. One is for women… but I wonder if all fit young gals. Then I saw one is for seniors, but then I don’t want to risk being the lone lady there. So may next idea was that I should find a pickleball pal who wants to sign up for one of the classes with me. Ha, that went on hold when a PB pal said she hurt her shoulder at a lifting class. Still on the hunt though for the right opportunity (which can get hard schedule-wise when we travel a lot)

I think you can’t be the raving about weights - until you do! This sounds like the ideal way o learn, with other women who are encouraging. Making your muscles stronger is going to pay off in many ways.

That is so cool. Congrats

I started lifting weights much more regularly and progressively about two years ago (ha - slow progress!).

I wil say watching some qualified trainers on Instagram demonstrating correct moves really helped (felt like it minimized risk of injury)..
