Adm. Frank B. Kelso II oversaw military operations in Libya and Iraq, helped burnish the Navy’s image following the Tailhook scandal and was one of the architects of a post-Cold War military, but the honor accorded him yesterday ranks among his proudest moments.</p>
<p>“This is the kind of recognition old men dream about,” said Adm. Kelso, one of five recipients of the Naval Academy’s distinguished alumni awards. “You don’t get a lot (of recognition). I sort of figure this will be the highlight of the rest of my life.” </p>
<p>Along with Lt. Gen. William M. Keys, Adm. Henry G. Chiles Jr., Rear Adm. Benjamin F. Montoya and Lt. Comm. James W. Kinnear III, Adm. Kelso was honored with the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Award, given to a living graduate who has ended his career but whose service typified the values of honor, duty, loyalty and integrity…

<p>I had the pleasure of attending this ceremony. The accomplishments of these men are remarkable and it was an honor to be in their presence. The speeches were moving, Admiral Fowler was smiling, and the mids were smiling when Friday liberty was granted.</p>
