I’m currently a rising junior from a decently large public school, and I have spent some time as an underclassman fighting for many leadership positions. I’m about to step into roles as a captain of the debate and math team, editor of the newspaper, founder and president of the public speaking club, and president of the Spanish club. I genuinely enjoy all these activities, hence my dedication to them, but I only worry that they will raise red flags to AOs once I start applying to colleges. Should I resign from any of my positions?
That’s definently not a red flag, especially if you have been a part of them for a longtime. But are you sure you can take on all of the responsibility?
Only a red flag if it looks like you’re collecting titles and not actually doing anything of substance. Do you have the time and interest to really perform in these roles? Do you have some specific goals or ideas of what you will do in these roles? While titles are fine, it’s what you do that’s important, more important than the title itself.
Yeah, I definitely think so. I had smaller roles in these clubs as a sophomore, and it was a very manageable workload.
That makes sense—I have plans to make my clubs more competitive since right now we’re lacking members and interest. I’ll keep this in mind.
Agree…not a red flag. Just be sure your EC commitments don’t get in the way of keeping your grades up, getting enough sleep, seeing friends, etc.
Same answer, as long as you can manage your time so as to maintain a healthy balance, and are still enjoying everything, go for it.
