Flags are Hate Speech at UC Irvine according to Associated Students council

“That’s a teacher talking”

No it’s not. I’m not a teacher and have never been a teacher.

^Good to know. From another thread, I thought I remembered you saying you were a teacher. My apologies.

Why would it matter what she does for a living? Her opinion is her opinion.

“war machine”?

Now I’m offended :open_mouth:

" I thought I remembered you saying you were a teacher. My apologies."

It was my mother who was a teacher.

But, regardless, I don’t see what my opinion has to do with any profession I might have.

I just don’t see why so many people have their panties in a twist over this.

That’s okay, emilybee, you are not required to understand it.

Emilybee, I don’t understand all the twisted panties either. Some people are just wound tight, I guess.

“That’s okay, emilybee, you are not required to understand it.”

Oh, I’m pretty certain I understand your thinking.

Thats great, I’m glad.

There are many who put a piece of cloth with certain colors on a gold-plated pedestal. I don’t get it either. While I have absolutely no desire to burn a flag, I believe the Supreme Court said it can be a matter of free speech to do so. A decision to not display a flag? Certainly there are bigger fish to fry. You can say the students are misguided and silly, but really, there’s nothing to see here.

I don’t see anyone putting the flag on a pedestal here. From the facts indicated, there was no requirement that the flag be hung in the first place. Despite the fact that the current representatives could have simply taken the flag down or not put one up, they instead legislatively banned all present and future flag displays from the area. Talk about overkill. If you think that banning symbols, especially those that represent the country we live in, is “nothing to see,” then how would you feel if these 6 students banned all cultural/religious attire from being worn in the lobby, because it might trigger bad feelings in some people? Or how about if they banned the bringing of certain books into the lobby, for the same reason? Would you be okay with that, too? I’m thinking some people on this thread might be.

Well, I guess someone has to stick up for the anti-flaggers. They are certainly not doing it themselves and there is a petition circulating now calling for their resignations that has more signatures already than any of them got votes so we’ll see where it goes. Additionally 3 of the 6 now support the veto overturning their dumb decision.

It wasn’t a vote not to display a flag, btw it was a decision to remove the flag that most students never even noticed because it symbolized oppression and other related nonsense that virtually no-one agrees with and the vast majority of student body and the administration considers an embarrassment.

And, now there’s this…

^ There is a difference between someone’s clothing and a flag hanging on a wall. I would have a problem with religious symbols, whatever they are, being hung on or on permanent display in the lobby.

One cannot equate a person carrying a book with this either.

The 6 students can’t ban anything. All they can do is pass a bill in committee that has to then go before the rest of the student government (not sure of their specific organizational structure). They were really powerless, but simply making a statement. Its gotten blown out of proportion.

No, they took it down. Before they were ordered to put it back up. And, now it has a guard. So stupid. omg.

The bill was not approved. The bill was to take all the flags down. Did that happen? If so, it was without approval.

No, the bill passed 6-4. The only reason it was overturned is because the executive cabinet vetoed it. And the veto can still be overridden with a 2/3 vote of the leg. But it probably won’t because at least three of the original 6 have publicly capitulated.

This is a good description of what sounds like really happened, as opposed to the bits and pieces that were posted in the media https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/03/09/uc-irvine-didnt-ban-flag-may-not-be-what-you-read-online

Have not read anywhere that any flags were actually ever taken down.

The 6 were essentialy ruling that anything that could be construed as offensive by some people should be removed from sight, period. For this alone they should be laughed from an environment that exists to foster intellectual dialogue on diificult issues.

This is not about the giant flag that flies outside of the administration building. It is a little flag in the student center. And, it is movable and it has been moving around a lot lately.
