Flags are Hate Speech at UC Irvine according to Associated Students council

The Associated Students of UC Irvine bans all flags in its lobby, because they can be construed as Hate Speech.

I wonder if these students find their federal FA from a colonial/imperialist country to be offensive…

No surprise that far left activists populate student governments where the general student population is apathetic and does not vote (the activists do tend to vote, and the traditional college student age is generally left-leaning). Same old story…

Thinking in only black and white is the providence of ignorance, hopefully four years in college can put a patch on it. it.

So any student can object to any decoration and have it removed? And then there were none.

Houston, we have a problem.

This is ridiculous.

I abhor speech codes.

Any student, any decoration? I’m sure some students can have some fun with that…

Lack of a flag is offensive. A state flag should be there to remind the students that the taxpayers of the state are footing the bill for their education.

Potted plants offended me. They should be removed from all lobbies immediately. What the heck???

As food has been used as a weapon throughout history, the members who voted for the flag issue should stop eating to show their support for those who have experienced this horror.

wow.
this will be interesting to see how this plays out…

That’s really dumb.

Could make for an interesting court challenge from someone who feels the ban on flags or other offensive items violates the first amendment. Especially considering Irvine is a state university and thus, has far less wriggle room than private institutions.

I want the names of the silly babies who voted for this blasted all over. Then, when they are looking for jobs and someone with hiring authority googles their names, their smug, entitled attitudes will hopefully prevent them from obtaining employment in this great nation.

No doubt they’ll feel this imperialist country is oppressing them

I feel threatened by GMTplus7’s avatar. Could the mods please remove it?

Student government has all of the posturing of actual government and none of the power or consequences. Why are y’all surprised about this?

I actually find this interesting for a number of reasons. Campuses are increasingly depending on international students for economic reasons. My campus is 20% international and that’s not rare anymore, Perhaps it isn’t bizarre to see the lobby of the student union as neutral space. Also there are lots of discussions about the decline of the nation state and the rise of global capital; the students’ vote may simply be the forerunner of a trend that earlier generations don’t feel (yet). Or maybe this is a response to the endless war, a life time of war that college students have lived through and a rejection of the gingoist forces of the reigning military industrial complex (Eisenhower was right).

I wouldn’t have proposed the resolution, but depending on the arguments I might vote for it, sez the mother of children who have pledged allegiance to three flags in our travels.

Well, we are here in America. If you don’t like the American flag, don’t come here for your education. I’m liberal but not so open minded that my brains have fallen out.

Have they run out of things to protest that now they want to protest the flag? How ridiculous. Maybe its time for them to protest fluoridated water again or something.

Colleges, imo, should make sure their students experience getting offended and learn how to deal with it. This ridiculous wrapping in bubblewrap approach is the opposite of educational.
