I have been using Frontline Plus on my dog for years. I was at Costco the other day and saw that they now carry a Kirkland (I think) generic type brand of Frontline, for about half the price. Is it the same? Can I just switch over to it? Any reason not to?
Thanks!

That’s what’s new in flea and tick!

Frontline’s patent expired so there are several generic versions in the pipeline and on the market. And the prices are very very good.

The fipronil ingredient is the generic component – and the little extra (plus version, max version etc) seems to vary between all the brands. I believe the Frontline manufacturer’s patent is still good on Frontline Plus.

I was just looking at a chart from one of my distributors will all the details on the various fipronil products. My best advice is read the labels. There is some thought that the inert ingredients aren’t the same and the effectiveness varies. My considered opinion is that there is a lot of variation in dog’s skin, owner’s application method, and all sorts of things like timing of baths.

You won’t hurt your dog by trying the generic fipronil – but you should monitor and see how it is working for you.

Not a vet – just a pet store owner with a degree in animal science. I was a speaker at a conference last year where the introduction of generic fipronil flea and tick products was a hot topic. I was part of a panel discussion on pet products from a retailer’s perspective.

I bought the Costco versions this weekend for dogs and cats. So far, so good! Glad to see cheaper prices…2 dogs, 3 cats.

Now, if they could just come up with something to keep them from dragging caught prey to my door…in the last week, 3 mice and 2 snakes! (oh, and the snakes weren’t dead)

Wow, cnp - thanks…that’s just the kind of info I was hoping for.
And mom2 - your post just made my skin crawl (I can’t deal with snakes!) :)

Thanks…think I’ll compare labels and hopefully give it a try. As mom2 says, that stuff is expensive!

I bought the Costco brand. It seemed like a lot more liquid to squeeze onto my dogs, leaving three oily patches on each. For the price I can live with it and it seems to work fine.

Hey, my skin has been crawling all week. It’s the price we pay for living near a forested area…very pretty, but critters everywhere. :(

I, too, noticed that there seemed to be more liquid in the Costco brand…but that’s fine.

As it is, there is a lot of liquid in the Frontline. One of my dogs must have a thick skin as the Frontline just sits there and doesn’t absorb quickly. I have taken to putting it on 4 spots and making sure she stands up while it soaks in!
