Flexibility of Michigan courses

I realise it’s a ‘state’ university, but I’m foreign and am still getting my head around the american system slightly, so would appreciate it if people could bear with me if I say something ridiculous :p

When you apply to Michigan, do you apply to the college or the university?

How flexible are the courses in Michigan? I was reading on the website that people double major in sciences and arts after two years providing both colleges agree with it but realise it’s hard work. If I wanted to do Engineering say, could I take supplementary classes or use my electives to take some pol. science and economic classes because they interest me as well.

And is it like Liberal Arts colleges in that I can declare my major in the second year? So can spend the first year experimenting with Science and Arts subjects?

You apply to different colleges within the university. For engineering, you apply to the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

You can minor in a LSA subject such as econ if you wish.

You’ll have to check with the specific minor on when you can declare.
