This year we have flies in our covered patio and in some of our grass areas. I don’t remember this being a problem last year, or any year, actually. What do you use to get rid of these pests, at least temporarily? It’s not a food issue- they just fly around in circles, going nowhere. Any suggestions?

As some of you may know, we’re having a wedding in our backyard in a few months and I really don’t want the guests to have to fight off flies during the ceremony.

I have someone come and spray garlic and cedar oil in the yard. I notice far fewer flying and biting insects. I could have had them spray chemicals that is more effective. It is good for three weeks after application. Good luck and enjoy the wecdding.

Thank you! What a wonderful idea! It would be great to be able to go the natural route, and three weeks would be good enough. What kind of company does this? Pest control? You can tell that this is all new to me. I’ve never had a flying insect problem in the 20 years we’ve been in this house.

Garlic/cedar spray for the lawn and fly catcher ribbons for the pool house. I’m going to look into this, thanks. I’ll need to figure out how to hang the ribbons where they can’t be seen.

Well hopefully by the time the wedding rolls around the flies will be gone and you can take them down.

I don’t know how much of a problem it’s elsewhere, but in western PA, “stink bugs” have made it big. Five years ago I wouldn’t have known what that would have meant; now they’re all over the place - outside and within the house.

It is probably just a spring thing as they finish a life cycle. Fly catcher ribbon work really well!

This may sound crazy, but I swear it works! Put a penny in a ziplock bag and fill the bag with water. Hang it around where flys gather and they will leave! My grandparents always had them in the dairy barns and horse stalls as a kid.

Some of the local outdoor beach bars hang baggies with water. They told me that the flies see a reflection that is quite magnified and they fly away!

I’m going to have to try the penny in the baggie thing. I bought some spray that is supposedly natural and non-toxic, but it doesn’t bother them. It does kill ants, though, I found out this afternoon. I also bought a jug that you fill with water and a solution that is supposed to attract them. So far, they aren’t interested.
How close to the flies does the baggie have to be? They seem to like this one area of my lawn that doesn’t really have any place to hang something from. And it’s an area where we were planning on putting a lot of wedding chairs.

I may be over-watering. I think I’ll turn off my sprinklers for awhile and see if it helpsl
