Flip This House #3

I noted that too - those two cabinets also seemed to be different heights?

I like those Home Depot house numbers. In fact, I have them on my house. But I don’t live in a million dollar California home with ocean views. I always notice when house numbers are special. Where I live, you can tell that the better homes have nicer-looking numbers.

@madison85, cb noted that the crown molding still needs to be added to the pantry cabinet, which is the one on the right. That’s the reason for the different heights.

Great pictures, great progress! I love the siding color.

Unless the pictures distort the siding color, I do not see any reasons to change it. Lovely color. The interior looks gorgeous!

Oh thank you so much for the vote of confidence on the siding color!! I will tell the painters to keep going with a 2nd coat and the painting of the front entry siding. I’m thinking Midnight Blue for a front door - what do you guys think??

Yes, crown molding not on right cabinet yet and unfortunately there is 2-3 inches above the tall cabinets. This house is not the normal 96 inches ceiling height - 8 ft. So, cabinets are built to be for an 8 ft ceiling. We have 2-3 inches higher from original house. This means no matter what we do we cannot get these cabinets to ‘go to top of ceiling’. Good point about dust mess on top of these cabinets. Hopefully buyers won’t notice!!

I’ll try to take better pictures of the exterior when the sun moves to the west and is shining on the house.

@coralbrook, have you considered putting another row of molding to bring the cabinets to the ceiling? I think it would add a more finished look. (But I agree; most people won’t notice as they go through the house.)

Out of sight, out of mind.

In my kitchen, the installers added some trim above the cabinets and then the crown molding to get it flush with the ceiling. Extra cost/extra work though.

I gutted my kitchen in 2012 and I have some cabinets that have some space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling. I dust a few times a year, but as notrichenough says, out of sight, out of mind. Not a biggie, IMO.

^ Part of my kitchen has a raised ceiling, and in those parts the cabinets don’t meet the ceiling.

In the 13 years since I redid my kitchen, the tops of the cabinets have been cleaned exactly zero times.

Fortunately no one can see up there.

I have 10’ ceiling in the kitchen, and without the gap between the crown molding on cabinet tops and the ceiling, the kitchen would have looked weird. Sure, there is dust. But who climbs up there to check? No one, and the crown molding keeps what collects behind it invisible. I shove the cat up there once in a while so she could collect the dust somewhat.

Unfortunately the wood and the cabinet paint color is so special, I would not be able to buy a block of wood and paint it to exactly match the cabinets in any way - to try to raise up crown molding. Not to mention that the ceiling isn’t flush… there’s the molding on top of the v groove paneling. As I say almost daily on each project “It is what it is”

I just purchased these online from Lowe’s for the small back bathroom - one on each side of a simple mirror

http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=50127730&partNumber=560606-57278-P7050-104&storeId=10151

I can always return them if they are ‘too much’ for the little bathroom

Today I am going to have to take a large truckload to the dump and then spend all morning returning items to the roofing wholesale place and Home Depot to get some money back on my credit cards. Then I need to focus on trying to find the right tile for the main bathroom because we need to get moving with tile installation. It is going to be tricky because the teal blue large vanity is going in that bathroom and the tile has to look right with the style and color of the vanity. I had purchased some Home Depot 12 x 24 grey vein porcelain on sale a couple of months ago, but of course it does not look right with the vanity. So, I used some of it for the laundry room flooring because it goes well with the kitchen coloring. But back to the drawing board for shower and floor tile

This little house has so much character. I love it.

Love it - my only complaint is that alas I cannot buy it - because I truly would.

Well, I can be talked out of the extra crown molding.

Is there under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen?

Sometimes I gave seen lighting on top of cabinets, too…a subtle glow…nightlight for the kitchen.

There are not any upper cabinets in this kitchen so there will not be any under cabinet lighting.

So glad you’re keeping the siding color. I like the sconce you linked - hope it works. Have you considered white tile for the bathroom? I like this white hex porcelain. It’s a classic and won’t compete with the vibrant vanity. http://www.lowes.com/pd_255055-372-0D251HEXMSC1P_1z0zm62+1z11oi5__?ipTrail=24.178.189.190&productId=3146107&pl=1&selectedLocalStoreBeanArray=%5Bcom.lowes.commerce.storelocator.beans.LocatorStoreBean%403e823e82%5D&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dfloor%2Btile%26page%3D1&storeNumber=1013&Ntt=floor+tile&facetInfo=Thru+body+porcelain

First, I put that hex tile in the back bathroom - the one with the Carrera marble subway tile. So, I’m thinking I need to do something a little different in the main bathroom so it doesn’t look like I just had a formula and stuck the same thing in every bathroom.

Exciting!!! Yesterday I had a chance to go to a Reclaimed Wood store. They had lots of interesting things, including some large 2 x 10 pieces of old wood that came out of the Cabrillo Bridge here in San Diego. I would have liked to pick one of those pieces for the fireplace mantle because they had a little local history. But I felt 2" deep was not enough meat for the fireplacement mantle that I wanted.

I found this incredible thick and rotted grey piece of large wood that was found as driftwood up in Oregon. Full of worm holes and rotted parts. I fell in love with it and bought the piece. It is very long but goes from wide at one point and then skinnier at the other end. We are going to have to cut off the skinny end and shim in some old pieces to make it more even as it fits on top of our ledge sticking out of the wall. Will have to ‘plane’ some off the bottom so that it sits level on the ledge.

When I came back to the project with this giant thing in the truck the guys came down to help carry it up. My carpenter took one look at the piece and wanted to know why I had this rotted, termite ridden, old piece of ruined wood. He just couldn’t understand that I had actually paid for this piece of wood, he thought I found it at the dump or something. These men just do not get the vision!! He is just laughing hysterically on how much work I am going to make him do to get this thing to fit on top of the mantle.

Pictures of my piece of wood are loaded to flickr - don’t laugh!
