Very Happy - keep up the optimistic positive vibes!
Today was so exciting! Kitchen countertops were installed and it always instantly transforms the kitchen into something recognizable. It was very scary watching them unload the expensive marble from the truck and carry the pieces up the stairs. Even though he tries to do most cuts in his shop, there were a lot of tweaks required. I specified very high backsplashes and a lot of cutouts were required for the outlets and the cable box (I installed a cable outlet in the kitchen area just in case buyer wants it).
Also, once again the kitchen wall was not square - what a surprise! Unfortunately there was a ‘hump’ that was pushing the countertop and the backsplash out at the end. The end was 3/4" away from the wall and it looked horrible. There’s just no way to try to fill in 3/4" with caulk, it would just drip out of that opening. So, my carpenter had to pull backsplash off and start chiseling out the drywall to get the wall to be more smooth and level. He’s such a good sport because every single time these granite guys show up about 3pm and they are installing until about 8pm. Usually I wait with them but my carpenter stuck around just in case there were issues, and of course there were.
Repainted the master bedroom with a lighter color and I really like it. It’s kind of hard to see in the dark pictures loaded. And, the master shower tile is almost done. The guy kept saying he would be done Thursday, but he’s not
Photos loaded. I loaded one of the original kitchen just as a reminder. I can see that there may have been a subconscious reason that I wanted a white, bright kitchen
I’m another who had forgotten about all the trash, etc. The kitchen is stunning and so is the bathroom tile. Thanks for keeping us updated on all of the “fun” progress. I know you are busy making this project come together so you can get it listed. I’m nowhere near you, so I have no idea what the market will command, but I think I’ll bet my money on Very Happy’s prediction of a bidding war.
@Consolation, just curious but why would you find it upsetting? I recently found photos online of a previous home. The sellers bought it from us over two decades ago and have ton a massive amount of work. While I don’t care for some of their choices, for the most part I think they made a huge improvement in the house. I used to regret that we could not afford to do more work on it, but just making that 1920s house functional, safe and efficient took all of our resources and we didn’t have funds left to do more. Now, I’m pleased to see that someone else turned our old ugly duckling into a lovely swan.
My dad sold the family home after my mom died and he remarried. I have no desire to see what the new owners have done to it. I want to remember it the way it was.
My parents sold our family home that they built and I grew up in years ago, when they had to make some financial choices. I have no desire to see what any subsequent owners did to it. I drove by it once. That was enough. I avoid that entire section of town when I’m in the area.
The estate administrator is interested in the transformation. I will be sending him the final photos when we are complete. He can talk to Walter and show the photos to him if Walter is interested.
I have had several prior owners (including foreclosed owners or hoarders) come back through projects during an Open House, or by invitation. Usually they come when my agent is holding the Open House so I do not get to talk to them. She says that they are blown away and very emotional, although they love the transformation. Probably improvements that they wished they could do (although maybe with their own taste). Most of the time they barely recognize the configuration because I always blow out a lot of walls to open up the kitchen and living areas.
So interesting … I just sold my beloved house of 20 years a few months ago and the new owners have just started renovations. I have to confess that I walk by it every weekend (it is on a nice walking route, not too far from my new house) and strain to see inside (from a respectful distance; the new owners aren’t living there). My ex-husband even called me to say, “it looks like they are taking down the wall between x and y,” in a gossipy tone. I’m dying to see how it turns out because I so wanted to renovate it but couldn’t afford it. I don’t want to hear about any problems they discover, however!
