Flip This House #4

I’ve seen people just cut a 2" wide strip from one end to the other, rather than cutting holes. Then you get a few pieces of sheet rock, cut them into two inch strips, and install them in the gap. Tape and joint compound and you are done. It’s much quicker that individually cutting, replacing, and patching all of those holes.

If the city won’t accept cellulose, can you blow in fiberglass? In think the cost is comparable, IIRC.

notrichenough… that is a brilliant idea!! You are correct, we could cut long strips of drywall replacement and screw them into the existing studs - not have to install a bunch of hand made backer plates into each hole! Love it. I’ll give you all the credit when I walk in tomorrow and tell my carpenter that I have a really good idea how we can do this even easier

Nah, let him think you’re a genius.

Besides, I can’t take credit, I just saw someone else do it.

The one drawback is you might get some blowback out of the slot, which will get a little messy. Maybe rig up a board with a hole in it that you temporarily install over the slot in each bay? Hmm. I’ve never blown in insulation personally before, I don’t know all the tricks.

Good solution, nre. I would probably go out of my way not to patch up drywall holes. Hate that, but somehow I am the one who ends up doing it! If it was my house, I’d probably go as far as to place the slots close to ceiling and cover them up with some crown molding, so no mud/orange peel would be needed, lol!

As far as mess goes, no matter how careful cb is, contractors doing this job will mess things up (check her photo of the stove covered in electrical crap, lol), so clean up will be needed anyway…

I’m surprised you are able to find good help for only $130 a day… I don’t think that’s possible here.

I found a really good score at Sears Outlet today. Because I am having the refrigerator and big oven unit delivered on Friday, I thought I would swing by one more time to see if they had any new dishwashers come out on the floor.

Got a 42 decibel (super quiet) stainless interior GE Profile for a steal. It had been sitting in the back ‘on hold’ for some customer and he didn’t get it for over 30 days

$479!!!

Best part is I can bundle it with the other delivery and not have to haul it around myself

That is a sweet deal.

Nice dishwasher!

wow. great deal! Was that also a sears outlet special?

Very nice! You’ve done a great job with the kitchen appliances. Now I’m looking forward to bathroom tile options!

I still have to find a 30" cooktop but that can wait a couple of days (nothing like a deadline!!). They have a couple of Kitchenaid 30" cooktops at the Sears Outlet with 4 burners, but I did not like the knob placement. I really do not like when the knobs are near the burners in the center - geez, it’s a paint in the butt trying to turn the knob when hot things are on the burner!

Yes, dishwasher was at Sears Outlet. They also had an incredibly gorgeous Bosch with only 42 decibel sound (which is important to me because the kitchen island is sticking out into the living room) but it was $599 and they wouldn’t budge on the price. So, I decided to save $120 and get the GE Profile.

In the middle of frantic tile decisions. For the smaller hall bathroom, it does not have any natural light. It does have the Solar Tube, but I wanted to make it really light and bright.

Bath Vanity selected. Unfortunately there was only 1 of these left in the whole County and I had to drive 1/2 hr to go pick this up in Eastlake. I love this vanity, it looks so much more expensive than it is. It has chrome handles, so I went with chrome shower fixtures to match the look

Based on the vanity, I am going to do 4 x 12 white glossy subway tile to for the shower walls give it a slightly contemporary style (kitchen will be contemporary)

Then I am going to put this octagon shaped Carrera marble tile on bathroom floor and shower floor.

I looked around and there are other versions of a Carrera mosaic tile, but this pattern went perfectly with the diagonal corners of the vanity

I still have to find a little bit of bling to offset the 4 x 12 subway on the shower walls. Working on that

My palette for the master bath is just gorgeous. This bathroom has a window with natural light so I decided to go with a light cream. Most of the tile is very neutral but a hint of a cool blue. I’m not sure it will show up well in the links

Floor tile will be Silk Road 20x20 that will make the floor appear larger. This bathroom is going to have radiant floor heat so I have to be careful with the wires running under the tile. Going to run the radiant heat wires into the shower also, so need to find just the right floor heat wires that work in the shower. This link shows the tile with a lot of browns and yellows. It does not have those tones. It has nice slight ridges for good grip for a floor tile

Then there will be 12 x 24 Metro Glacier tiles (hint of blue lines) for the shower walls.

I’m thinking of this gorgeous slightly blue grey mosaic for shower floor, but I need to check with my tile guy on whether it will be safe or not because it is a glossy tile but will have a lot of grout for safety. Pictures are very deceiving… it is not grey (even though the name is grey) it is a very subtle blue

But the best part is the shower fixtures and sink faucets I have selected. I am in love with the new coloring called ‘slate’

It all looks so good together. I will take a picture of my samples on the floor to get a better idea when I am at the project tomorrow

I’ve loaded a couple of pictures to the Flickr group of the vanity (used in the shed bathroom at Hoarder House project) and the 4 x 12 subway tile (used in main bathroom at Hoarder House project)

I purchased the 4 x 12 subway tile at Arizona Tile because I get a really good discount. Price after discount $1.88 / square foot at Arizona Tile versus $3.29 / square foot at Home Depot.

I just want to emphasize that I don’t do every bathroom and kitchen the same, although I might mix and match a couple of favorite pieces (like the vanity). I try very hard to make the bathrooms and kitchen fit the overall style of each house.

It is amazing to me how quiet dishwashers have become in recent years.

Why can’t they do the same thing with leaf blowers?

VH, I see maintenance workers with Stihl rechargeable leaf blowers - relatively quiet machines. Here is an example:

I like that tile!

Love the Silk Road tile! Gorgeous.

Beautiful tile choices. It’s smart of you to use some elements again if you found them high quality and they fit the aesthetic of the current project.
