Thank you all for such great photos. Definitely on the right track for the ‘contemporary’ style.
Never a dull moment!
Yesterday we had extremely crazy weather in Point Loma. Thunderstorms, lightning and downpours. Of course we need the rain, I’m not begrudging that. BUT, this came out of nowhere… we never have thunderstorms and lightning and no one warned of a rainstorm coming. It was supposed to be high humidity from Hurricane Dolores or something.
Woke up at 5:45am to lightning and heavy rain downpour. OH NO, our roof isn’t finished on the project. Remember the dilemma of first, torch paper for flat roof was ripped and I had to return, then I had to return it and they put wrong color in truck. They couldn’t finish seaming flat roof area and making it waterproof with shingles coming down from sloped roof. Back to roofing supply and I get the right roll. Ready to go
Of course roofing guy does not come by after work and finish the job. No big deal, never rains here. It was a big disaster. Tile guy shows up at 8am and starts calling me. I have to run over there to see water leaking over living room area, master bedroom closet AND the new drywall in master bathroom where new tile is. This is a big problem. My poor carpenter was trying to enjoy a day off, I just called him for advice on what to do.
Next thing I know he is calling me from project telling me that he has been on the roof and nailed down some GAF plastic stuff, tarps, etc. He hopes it will solve the problem. It really didn’t because tile guy called me again later in afternoon and said they will all have to go home early because too much water coming into master bath.
I’m going over today to set up fans and cut open drywall so that everything will dry good. I do not want any mold forming behind all our new drywall
Called the roofer early and the poor guy had been sent to Fontana in Los Angeles area by his boss. Hopefully he will get that roof finished today.
Back to cooktops
I found this on eBay and I’m very tempted to buy it quickly. I think Thermador makes a really good cooktop product
^^^@coralbrook, I have that cooktop, or something close to it. Go for it. Very well known brand, looks great, etc. And it works well too!
ETA: Mine is a 36".
I, too, have the 36" version of that cooktop. Very good. The only thing I dislike about it is cleaning around the star pattern.
Go for it!!! I have a 16 yr old Thermador gas cooktop and absolutely love it.
Mr. B says these are like hammers - pretty much the only thing that could go wrong is a faulty igniter. Mr. says it is easy to replace.
looks good! I’ve had Dacor cooktops for decades but for that price I’d pop for a Thermador!
If you can get it without getting into a bidding war, it will be a good deal:
Dang, I just noticed that I have to bid on it for 2 days. Not going to get that Thermador, it will get high at the last minute
I’ll keep looking. There are some ‘slightly used’ ones, but that is too much of a gamble without eyes on the item.
Here is a cooktop that keeps popping up when I look around on the Internet. It is a brand I have never heard of, but it is the Costco cooktop. My experience with Costco (not that I am even a member because I don’t need to buy produce by the crate) is that they do a lot more research on products than I can and they tend to have the highest value product for the price.
118 reviews and they are mostly all good
BUDGET UPDATE
To confirm, I still do not know what my total costs for downstairs conversion are because I am waiting for two plumbers to give me an estimate for the sewage pump thing (they came to look at project and have never submitted an estimate!!). We may be learning how to do a sump pump install ourselves at this point. Also, I have not decided what type of door to install for our large garage door opening which is going to be 10’ wide by 8’ tall (foot taller than normal doors)
SPENT TO DATE = $40,000
Roof total (all paid) $6,572 (less than my $7,500 estimate)
Demolition and dumping $2,725
Drywall, framing, texture $3,850
Plumbing (again over budget) $3,900
Electrical $2,275
Kitchen $6,000 still not done purchasing cabinets
Bathrooms and Miscelleanous = $14,678
After removing the upstairs deck from the project I think my total spend will be about $105,000 to $110,000, depending on how much money I spend for curb appeal, landscaping, small deck below and patio
Apparently Ancona is not a manufacturer, but a reseller that slaps a label on another manufacturer’s product. It looks like the actual manufacturer is an Asian company with the name “Asia Manufacturing Solutions”.
One of the ways Costco gets such cheap prices is that many of the things they sell are made exclusively for Costco, and are lower quality or de-contented in some way compared to the seemingly identical product in other stores. For example, a TV may have only 2 hdmi ports instead of 4. It’s difficult to compare because they have unique model numbers. So I don’t know that I completely agree with the statement that “they tend to have the highest value product for the price”.
I always go right to the negative reviews to see what the problems are. There’s some complaints about the grates with this cooktop, they allow small pots to tip, and some quality issues.
Sear Outlet right now has a 30" Whirlpool for $450: http://www.searsoutlet.com/d/product_details.jsp?pid=137628&mode=buyUsedOnly&sid=IDx20110411x000008&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=23975445&gclid=CKiaq_rp58YCFYORHwodyboAQQ
OK, I’ll keep looking.
My local Sears Outlet doesn’t have any 30" gas cooktops right now. Reason I am focusing back on the cooktop is I realized that my countertop guy is coming for measurements on Tuesday. He is going to expect me to have the sink and cooktop cutout measurements ready for him. Ooops… don’t have either of those items ready for him
Why not just fill it with dirt? Then if anyone ever needs to get to the pipes they don’t have to dig up the slab again.
Not sure what you mean by “cut”. I think you can probably just jackhammer the parts you need, since it is in the back it doesn’t have to be super-neat.
Jeez, Sears wants $220 to deliver it. That seems excessive.
Because the one she linked to is located in Northern California and I’ve noticed that they just don’t want to be in the business of shipping stock from an outlet store.
Yes, we could probably jackhammer the area for the bathroom plumbing, but we will probably have to concrete cut the area into the slab for the staircase foundation wall. Probably have to attach it to existing slab with some kind of rebar or reinforcing so that the slab doesn’t start pulling apart and cracking.
Still waiting for my plan revisions to get finalized. They have to go back to Structural Engineer on Monday for new stamps before I can go back into the City.
I have no idea how I am going to go about this… there are about 6 reviews required at City (counting the separate Landscape Review). Two of the reviews are complete and stamped approved already. The others are ‘underway’ somewhere in the back office, including Historical. They are not going to be happy that I want them to pull plans from somewhere and replace with these new plans. Then I’m going to beg to be removed from Landscape Review requirement. Hope it doesn’t mean that I have to start all over again - mostly because I don’t want to start counting the days all over.
“For example, a TV may have only 2 hdmi ports instead of 4. It’s difficult to compare because they have unique model numbers. So I don’t know that I completely agree with the statement that “they tend to have the highest value product for the price”.”
I’d rather not pay extra for the features I have zero use for, like 2 extra HDMI ports. All that’s needed is one. That said, even though the cooktop looks awesome and has stellar reviews, I would be reluctant to put it into a house which would be marketed to others as a contemporary higher end home. I would not use Whilpool either. Nothing against Whilpool - it is just not the name that is associated with “higher end.”
I’m trying to avoid Frigidaire, Kenmore or Whirlpool for the cooktop because they don’t carry enough brand snobbery, although the reality is that Whirlpool manufactures a lot of these appliances for other companies. I had to do the Kenmore refrigerator because I needed the 33" wide and the selection was limited.
