Brand snobbery - LOL. Interesting, my iPhone left the “r” out of Whirlpool - twice!
Hope you got the roof covered properly - absolutely pouring again! What’s all this about no rain in San Diego? I gather yesterday broke the record in rainfall - for the entire month of July, let alone one day!
Ugggh, just got the call awhile ago. Luckily torch on flat portion of roof got complete but a portion of shingles still not done.
Sure, if you don’t use them, then great. I’ve used 4 before.
But it’s more about the stuff you can’t see - did they use a cheaper less reliable power supply? Did they use a screen that is less good? Vietnamese electronics instead of higher quality Korean electronics? Costco has buying power, but so do Best Buy and other large retailers, and Costco imposes a pretty draconian return policy on their vendors. Something has to give.
In the case of that Ancona cooktop - it weighed only 2/3 of the Whirlpool I linked to. That’s a lot of metal… maybe the burners are very thin and will corrode faster, maybe it has a flimsy feel, maybe the grates feel really thin and cheap, etc… you don’t get something for nothing, even at Costco. And I say that as a member.
what about this Bosch 30" cooktop from Amazon? $749.00
Free shipping and a “hi end” name.
what I like is the very modern, clean look.
here’ s the same model but with 5 burners instead of 4
cb, what is the plan for venting the cooktop? Hood or downdraft?

Historic July rain in San Diego.
Click on View Gallery in the linked article.
Average July rainfall is .02 inches, and 1.03 inches fell (some areas received more).
HOOD!!!
Definitely a large contemporary hood. I already purchased it through a distributor I use in Los Angeles. Funny that I have the hood sitting there ready to install, but still don’t have the cooktop. I wanted to have the hood so the electrician, carpenter and roofer could get the vent exit through roof correct. My electrician does a really cool thing. He installs the outlet for the hood above the ceiling in the attic area so that you don’t have to mess around trying to hide the cord and plug somewhere behind the metal box. Cord goes up through the hole in the ceiling and plugs in out of sight.
Today is ‘Assess the Damage’ day. We will probably have to cut out some ceiling drywall and try to dry out the ceiling areas where rain penetrated. It’s hard to tell because the leaks were in the flat roof area - cannot crawl up in the attic and see where it is wet. I think we have three areas where we have to pull down ceiling drywall - but first we will try to dry it out with big fans. I’m just hoping that the master bathroom is an area we can dry out with fans and not have to pull down drywall (with new tile)
We are one of the areas that received more rain. Because it was a high humidity tropical storm type of system, it dumped the minute it hit land from the ocean, although the winds were coming from inland some of the time. Pretty sure we got more than an inch, but really cannot tell because I’m not an expert. Only way I can tell is by looking at the level of the pool
I looked very carefully at the Bosch cooktops because there are several ‘new in box’ ones for sale on eBay at good prices. But, I read the reviews and these Bosch models seem to have an issue that the stainless steel stains or darkens around the burners if someone uses a pot that is too large on the burner. Who the heck hasn’t done that? I do not pay any attention to burner size versus the pot that I’m putting on the burner. I’m probably supposed to but I have other things I’m more worried about .
What? Match the pot with burner? Lol. I have not had any issues with my white enameled cooktop. I can see how inferior stainless steel can get oxidized in this manner and lose its “steel” looks.
Good catch on the ‘weight’ of the cooktop. I would have never though to look at the weight to determine quality.
While weight could matter, I would not pay as much attention to the weight as to the steel composition. Not all ss are chemically equal (e.g., Bosch cooktop issues).
Check the level of chemicals in the pool CB. You may need to add due to the rain. And it’s easy to overlook when we don’t get rain for so long…
I’ve been gone a while but just looked at your pics and the bathroom looks amazing! good luck today assessing the damage.
Coralbrook, I just saw your garage door mockup (?) on your Flickr page. I’m not sure that the one you used gives enough oomph. If you can get enough opacity in the glass inserts, I think that you might consider a stronger statement with this strong horizontal style rather than the window-pane look:
CB, does your roofer have any liability for leaving you with an unfinished roof for more than a week?
I think most people would be impressed that you installed a Bosch cooktop. No one is going to buy or not buy your house based on some reviews that say the top discolors if you use too-big pots.
