That microwave looks fabulous. I wish that style had been available when I had to make my selections. Mine is also the 24" and I haven’t tried anything that didn’t fit. 30" will be huge!
Instead of a fixed island that might block traffic and mobility, how about a smaller moveable one? You could either get one that compliments that cabinetry and include it with the house, or stage with one so that buyers wouldn’t identify missing staging needs. Something more that a cart but less than a massive piece of furniture?
When I’m cooking, I’m in and out of the fridge a lot more than the ovens, so I’d want the fridge where Coral has it. I would put a 24 x 54" island (leaving 45" on three sides) for landing area, but not impeding passageway thru to back hallway. IMHO…
I know that I started design with ovens over by stove. And then we all had a discussion about functionality and I switched them. There will be an issue if I switch back (besides wiring already done). If I move 36 inch fridge (and required side panels) over to other area I will lose 3" or more and will only have 9" left for a tall cabinet, which really isn’t even available.
Also I need to be careful about frig size. If I get a full size frig its going to stick out from cabinetry and might cause issues with width available with island placement. He designed with counter depth frig because I always do that. But counter depth may not have enough cu ft for a family.
If you put in an island, it would be great to have one of those cabinets where you can store a stand mixer or cuisinart on a pop-up shelf. I aspire to one–or in fact wo, one for each-- some day.
Can you steal space for a full depth fridge from whatever is behind it? If I’m looking at the most recent plans, it’s cabinetry.
I have one of those in my island, for my KitchenAid mixer. ![]()
" If I get a full size frig its going to stick out from cabinetry"
which is a VERY , low end look these days in a "1.5 Million $$ house.
All the more reason to move it over away from the island and adjust the depth of the depth of the neighboring cabinet so that it does not stick out.
what “required side panels” are you referring to?
hard to comprehend since we cant see with the blacked out pdf
The oven cabinet located to right of hallway passage has a ‘finished’ side. The refrigerator to the left of hallway passage needs a 3/4" panel that is installed to cover side of refrigerator and upper cabinet (which does not have a finished side). So, the 33" wide cabinet for ovens would become a 37" placement which steals 4" away from the tall cabinet. Basically, we wouldn’t be able to get anything in that space - it would have to become dead space
I’m going to have to resort to laying out kitchen with blue tape or something on the floors. Kitchen is very hard to visualize because the original walls are still there. We haven’t bumped out the walls to the new layout yet because we need to put up a lot of structural stuff to hold roof before I can knock out the walls
My agent is leaning towards no island at this point. She says we can stage one or that buyers will realize there is plenty of room and then they can buy something they really love, whether on wheels, a piece of furniture, marble top for baking or stainless steel cart.
I agree with deleting the island . A moveable one can be just a useful. And having a bigger looking kitchen is always a good selling point!
Where do you plan on putting the micro drawer?
The microwave drawer is going under countertop to left of refrigerator. There is 42" wide run there and microwave will go to far left with a 12" cabinet between refrigerator and lower microwave drawer. It will have a countertop above it to land and a countertop to the left of it to land stuff next to stove. Beginning of stovetop is about 3ft away to left. It might be tight if someone is trying to work with microwave at same time that someone is standing at stove, but without an island there is plenty of space to move around
Just visualized it in my own kitchen (which is my favorite way to figure out if spacing works) and it is very doable.
Here’s an idea of something that a buyer could put into the kitchen to help with ‘landing’ area in the middle of the kitchen. I think these dimensions would be very close to perfect

Nice! Then the owners could move it around as needed. And if they don’t want it, you can roll it to your house!
I wish o had thought to steal 6 inches of space from the area behind my fridge. I would have then had the depth for a full size fridge that would have been flush with the cabinets…far less exoensive…and more space…than a counter depth.
I know someone who did that
and it worked out very well!!
Glad there’s support for a moveable island!
I can steal from behind the fridge by opening studs with a header and pushing into landing area at top of stairs. I can put a broom closet on other side with just a drywall back and build two sides with something (since it will be an odd depth for a standard cabinet)
I have a full-depth fridge. It’s on a wall that originally had pantries that were 30" deep so putting a 30"-deep fridge was a no-brainer.
How deep is a full depth fridge and a counter-depth fridge (30" and 24")?
That’s about right @Madison85. Full depth is about six inches deeper than regular…and those fridges that are counter depth usually cost at least twice the cost of a standard size one. I wish I had thought of that when I built my house!
Counter depth refrigerators are more expensive and obviously have less space. Have no idea why they cost more. A salesperson tried to explain to me that it was 'mass production ’ issue. But, they look way better in a kitchen
