Flip This House #5

Has anyone checked the San Diego news for reports of a fed-up flipper flourishing a hammer at the permitting office?

Has anyone checked the bars closest to the permit office?

Permit issued. Fees paid (including some ridiculous $2,000 recycling bond that’might’ get returned after final inspection).
Foundation inspection already scheduled for tomorrow morning. We are on our way

Just in the nick of time:) neighbor came over to the guys this afternoon asking if we had a permit for all this work

Finally!!! Full steam ahead!

Yes!! Successful in getting toilet back into basement bathroom. When Supervisor finally came out with stamped plans i begged for 5 minutes. I handed him my copy of the page from municipal code and stated “i was bullied into removing the toilet from the basement bathroom. Can you explain to me why i cannot have a 1/2 bath in basement”. He read it and i explained that Reviewer was so focused on the fact that it was unpermitted. He replied"but you are trying to get it permitted now" YES

He asks if it is already included in water usage card. Yes, it is because water usage alreafy signed off. He throws his hands in the air and whispers to me to go in corner and draw the toilet back in.

The next step is i have to standcin line at each department and have approval stamps transferred to this final set of plans. The construction guy sees me sitting there and motions me over. Evidently the Zoning Supervisor went to him and explained that he authorized toilet back into basement. He double checked the Water usage card and stamped me out.

It was about 1pm by the time i finally left

Well double yay!!

When construction reviewer opened the plans for basement he commented “nice toilet diagram…looks just like it was computer generated” it probably wasnt exactly to scale:)

Hurray!!

Well everyone needs a large throne

Woohoo!! Full steam ahead is right!!

WHAT A RELIEF!!! @coralbrook: When this is finally over, you’ll need to write this up. Maybe as a scathing letter to the City, or maybe just for comic relief. You are to be congratulated. If I were near you, I’d shake your hand and give you a huge hug!!!

Does everyone have to go through this rigamarole? I recognize you’re doing a lot to the house, but if this is their standard operating procedure, something needs to change.

This is better than any serial soap opera on TV, I am addicted. AND I am so happy for a happy ending so far.
cue hearts and sappy music…
Congrats on your reward for your perseverance CB!

Personally I’d write a nice note to/re the supervisor thanking him for stepping in when things were basically lost in the system.

A mere like is not enough for this news! <:-P :"> =)) ^:)^

CB, congratulations on securing financing, getting the permits, and getting ready to shift into high gear as you get this amazing project on the road! With that kiiller view, your savvy expertise, and your excellent eye for design and aesthetics, it’s going to be a doozy. Thanks for letting us go along with you for the ride!

All of your kind words mean so much to me. Thanks for going on the bumpy ride with me.

Developers usually hire a firm that takes the plans through the whole process for them, at additional cost of course. Homeowners are also pretty oblivious to the process. Even if they didn’t hire a full blown architect firm, a draftsman or engineer will send plans downtown with a permit expediting firm. There are dozens of these people who sit there all day with piles of plans. That adds days to the process.

I always chose to do it myself to save time and money. In this case i think the plans would still be in an abyss and noone would have fought for the basement bathroom or other things. For example, remember that my’water usage’ was too high and they were going to require a meter upgrade? If I had not been sitting there myself I would not have been able to negotiate and get him to give me a little leeway.

Now we can finally get back to kitchen design and appliances!! I went off course for awhile and I need to get some cabinets ordered.

So do you get to keep the laundry room sink too or did you have to lose that to keep the basement half bath?

Hurray! Congrats on defeating the bureaucracy!

I’m not sure it would be a good idea to write a complaint letter about this whole process. They all know who CB is now, and she will have to work with them in the future. If brought to task, they will all just say they are so overworked and understaffed, and that she didn’t know what she was doing, and it caused delays.

If anything she should write a nice thank you to everyone, so next they will be more willing to do a like extra. Grease the wheels a little.

I have watched a few "Flip or Flop’’ episodes and I was confused why they came across so many unpermitted additions. Now it seems clearer.
