Flip This House #5

Not a huge fan of Arabesque tile in general. The subway tile is really nice.

I like the floor tile, although I think it is almost too worn. I can’t remember ever seeing tile that is that naturally worn, so to me it looks artificially distressed. I really like the color and pattern though.

Curious to see what the hubbub is. I’m picturing a godfather-type scenario where the neighbor whose view got blocked by the new floor left a severed squirrel head in the kitchen.

Not a scary clown, thank goodness.

Notrichenough is kind of close:)

I need to decide if it is significant enough to notify my investors before I talk about it in public.

As you might expect, I love the tile. By far my favorite of the tile jobs you’ve done. Using the arabesque as an accent on the wall is inspired.

I would fall in love with that bathroom instantly.

Did someone unexpected declare their undying passion for you? Did one of the workmen attack another one? And you deciding whether to fire them? Did the guy who used to live there move in overnight? I think it would be better to have found a skeleton!

I hope it does not involve your lead carpenter…

Oh no, I hope no crazy ass has threatened you with a lawsuit or left a note saying that the place will be burned down!!!

The tub surround tiling looks great.

The scary event sounds really troubling. I hope everything’s ok and you can get some well-deserved sleep.

It does not involve my lead carpenter, but it did distract him all day as he was consuming himself acting as Sherlock Holmes detective

No lawsuits. Nothing that is going to stop the project

Love your lead carpenter - he has your back!

I see in the pictures you showed us how the tile would look laid out diagonally or straight. I really dislike when tile or wood floors are laid out diagonally - just my 2 cents - so my vote goes for straight if it’s not too late.

Maybe you need to install some temporary work site security cameras or notify the police to keep an eye on the place if they as passing through the neighborhood at night.

You/he found someone’s stash of heroin or pills?

I’m glad it doesn’t involve your lead. I am a huge fan of that man!

Another huge fan of your lead, here!

I can’t tell whether your inviting constructive criticism for the bath assumes that the floor tile is a done deal, or whether you’re still thinking about it.

I really like the tile’s colors and pattern, and appreciate your aesthetic for the bath. I don’t think the fact that it’s not “neutral” is a problem, as the blue is subtle and muted. My concern is that the faux distressed print of the tile makes it look lesser quality than the high-end finishes you usually use. I’d love a floor that has worn over time, but a floor where each tile has the same part “worn off” would catch my eye and would bother me.

However, sometimes online photos can be misleading. if you find that the faux nature of the tile print isn’t a problem in real life, I am delighted to have you ignore my comment entirely.

As for laying the tile square or diagonally, that’s another decision I bet is best decided on-site between you and your tile-setter. Sometimes a diagonal placement can make the room seem more expansive.

It’s getting really fun to watch things come together on this project. The gate photo is gorgeous, reflecting the unique and inviting nature of this home. I can’t wait to see things unfold as your vision becomes a reality in the coming weeks.

Hang in there. It’s going to be amazing!

It is so kind of you to keep us updated and to keep posting photos. Thank you, cb!

One huge tip from Mr. B: just say NO to vessel sinks. I finally convinced him to look at potential empty nest relocation places…He was interested and began to look at townhomes with me, but as soon as he saw a vessel sink, he said that our house was the best house on the planet… Please no vessel sinks.

CB, a rather silent but consistent reader of yours. You, of course, have piqued all of our interest but, truly, I hope you and all your workers are okay and that whatever the latest issue is will resolve easily without trauma.

Love your work and am especially crazy about the entrance gate. I can’t wait to see the finished house.

Maybe it’s time to install a few cameras for security. Costco sells reasonably priced systems with DVRs and remote access that you could include as a feature for buyers, especially if they travel a lot or plan to use this as a part time residence. Good luck!

@BunsenBurner 's vessel sinks are my diagonal floors - when I see diagonal floors I am immediately turned off.

No vessel sinks. They would smack ‘contemporary’ style and honestly are just a pain in the butt to clean.

I used the wrong word for the tile pattern. I am going to lay it in a diamond pattern, not diagonal. They will be straight left/right across the floor, but rather than laid down square against each other, the tiles lend themselves to a diamond pattern. The diamond pattern minimizes the grout line pattern between the tiles.

Agree that the ‘distressing’ of the tile is more than I hoped for but the distressing kind of goes away when there are a lot of them laid down.

Woke up at 5am panicking that I should go over to the project and see if we had another incident in the middle of the night. But then I realized that I just don’t want to be the first there alone. Patiently waiting for my lead carpenter to get to the project and report back to me.

cb, I am so sorry to hear that something unsettling occurred. I sure hope it was an isolated incident. Please continue being cautious and making your personal safety and the safety of your crew a priority. Although I know you don’t want to add a new item to the budget, suggestions for a surveillance system make sense.

If you install security cameras, we’ll take turns keeping watch. Just kidding. But thought you might need a laugh.

Sounds scary. Also sounds like perhaps no one should be there alone. You may need to institute the buddy system.
