Go for the Bertazzoni. I have a Bertazzoni range and I really like it. And anyway most of your target audience is not likely to be immersed in the relative differences in the mid- to high-end appliances; they are going to be mostly concerned with the overall look, and the Bertazzoni range definitely looks great. (Disclaimer though: I’m not familiar with the range top). What is really great looking is the Bertazzoni hood when paired with the range (and I assume range top).
Lots of people tell me that they can’t believe that the builder installed the Bertazzoni range and hood in a spec house. It definiteky comes across as high end; I get more comments on it than the Sub-Zero fridge that this builder installed (which to me is much more surprising in a spec house than the Berrazzoni range).
It’s wonderful to know that someone actually has a Bertazzoni range and they like it. We don’t see them very much here in San Diego. I read a lot of reviews over the weekend and all the negative reviews had to do with the oven, not the cooktop. The Bertazzoni ovens do not have any electronics so they don’t have any built in thermostat for the ovens and, evidently, you have to put a manual thermostat inside the oven to make sure it is at the right temperature.
But, only good things about the cooktop in general because it is easy to clean up.
I am going to go to the local appliance store (Pacific Sales) and order one to make sure that it is covered by all the warranties and service. I don’t think I’m going to trust trying to order it over the Internet. There aren’t any carried in this region so I cannot see one live.
And then we will move on to the important stuff… Lighting!!! I have most of the closet lighting stacked up here but I don’t want to install the big pieces until the floor sanding is done.
@coralbrook I think Pirch in UTC carries this brand- might be worth a look anyway…
Will bondo and sanding the doors, and then repainting/spraying still leave vandalism evidence since any woodgrain will look disturbed?
We have sanded 2 or 3 and put bondo on. You can see the bondo patch on the big black patio doors. We are experimenting with a couple of doors to see if they are salvageable. My main issue is the big Anderson patio doors because it would be a nightmare to try to replace them since the threshold and framing are installed, caulked and flashed in at this point. But the good news is they scratched up the exterior side of the doors and maybe noone will look closely:)
Thank Goodness they didn’t break any glass in these doors. And…my precious Nano doors are stored in a different place and didn’t get touched (probably because they aren’t painted and they never saw them). Could you imagine the time and cost to replace those?? Cannot even think about it!!
My kitchen cabinets are getting installed today!! I’m very excited. The midnight blue uppers are stunning
Other than the Andersons, what would it cost to replace the damaged doors?
If I had to replace all the new custom doors (which are the composite doors) it would be $1,200 and 4 weeks out. Then I would have to paint them all again with a good sprayer!!
Interviewing new painters this week so we can get back on track
I want to report only happy things today
First… big kudos to my lead carpenter and the framer. He arrived early (without my knowledge) and proceeded to open up the kitchen cabinets and start leveling out the kitchen and getting SOMETHING installed! He knew that it would just make my day if I could walk in and finally see the beautiful cabinets out of those dang cardboard boxes. I guess they all feel sorry about last week’s events. I was so excited to see the Midnight Blue cabinets getting installed. Now, I will admit it wasn’t all to be nice… the other guys are installing insulation on top floor today and he hates insulation and is practically allergic to it. He didn’t want to be anywhere near the top floor so he invented this important work in the kitchen.
The east bank of cabinets were installed today. Of course everything about the old floor wasn’t level so there was a lot of shimming involved
And the run of cabinets on the sink island are done. He stayed late to get them done.
Insulation getting installed upstairs so that we can call for the final insulation inspection and start drywalling soon.
But the most amazing thing that happened today is that the dang W#%#$^%$& Deck waterproofing company finally showed up to do the flashing and stuff for the top floor decks. Technically I need to have those decks flashed and caulked up for the Stucco lath inspection which is happening on Wednesday. I interviewed three deck water proofing companies to do the floors of the decks because I do not want any liability for leaks on the decks to the rooms down below.
It took me one week to get the guy to even show up and look at the decks to give an estimate. That’s when he announced he didn’t like OSB and we had to redo all the plywood on the decks. Then it took another week to even get him to tell the cost. At that time I made it VERY CLEAR that he had to get all the pre-stucco work done before the stucco guys came to wrap the house. Last week the stucco guys came and he still hadn’t showed up. Many phone calls and many broken promises. I just went ahead and finished the stucco paper and chicken wire… too bad
On Thursday last week I made it VERY CLEAR that he had to come start the job and get the flashing tied into the stucco wrap because a) I have scheduled an inspection and b) stucco guy is coming back to start the base coat around the whole house.
On Sunday I get a vague email with a contract that I was supposed to sign and then 'I’ll call you Monday afternoon to schedule some time to start the work". I blew a gasket and made it very clear that I would not sign a contract with no written commitment of start date. I would hold the contract at the project and hand it to him if he showed up to meet my deadlines.
Lo and behold I get a phone call this morning that they will ‘squeeze’ me in for flashing this afternoon. He promises he will come back as soon as the stucco base coat is done. Yeah!!! we can stay somewhere near my desired schedule.

LOVE the cabinets!!!
Yes, they’re really nice!
What insets did you finally pick for the upper cabinets?
I haven’t picked them yet because I wanted to see the cabinets first. Same with countertop
I have several samples ordered and on their way. Then I’ll put them up and take some pictures.
For countertops I’m leaning toward a new honed quartz that looks like marble. Or a honed light color granite

@Coralbrook Have you ever read the book, HOMEBODY by Orson Scott Card? I was thinking about you and some of your crazy issues with your various projects as I was reading. Of course it’s total fiction but it might be a fun read for you, especially if you think one of your projects is just getting too crazy:-)
Please go with a French door, I beg of you.
I am willing to be that French door will be okay with pretty much everyone, whereas many really don’t like side-by-sides.
Speaking as a cook, the Newport house had a MUCH better kitchen than the others in every way. (It also had an outdoor kitchen and a pool! Frankly, I’m kind of surprised they did get more for it.) The Dacor range would appear to be dual fuel convection, and runs almost $4K. Having a full size oven under the hood and a separate wall oven is a significant advantage IMHO.
I think that your house is by definition better than the Froude house, which had pretty much a galley kitchen open to the dining area and living area. And no hood. Blech.
“I am willing to be that French door will be okay with pretty much everyone…”
Except me. I detest French door fridges.
Left-hinged singe door for me, please.
There’s one in every crowd, LOL.
It is all about ergonomics for me, Consolation. If I have to put a large platter into the fridge, I would much rather juggle one door than two at the same time. Most French door fridges have cheap hinges, so the doors do not stay open at the angle I open them. I can handle a single door with my shoulder while holding onto the platter with both hands… doing this with two doors is tricky. You have to open both doors at pretty much 180 degrees to have an unobstructed access to the inside of the fridge… With a single door, 90 degree or even less will suffice. There is a reason commercial fridges have single doors (or sliding doors).
