You do need some kind of baseboard, but going with white seems best.
I LOVE the floors.
I would not go to the expense of buying an island. Anyone willing or able to pay $1.5 mil + to buy CB’s house can afford to pay for the island of their dreams.
About the baseboards. Didn’t CB say that the original house did NOT have baseboards?
If that is the case…wouldn’t it be a lot easier to have the painters paint all the way to the floor?
There were baseboards, but they are flush with the walls because the walls were originally plaster or something. And they are white so they blend in.
I don’t like the look of paint going down to the floor with no transition, just a crack. There should be something there.
Remember the crazy black and White House?? It sold immediately and just closed escrow above asking price at $1.4 million

Then I agree that white baseboards would look the best…same color as the walls?
I’m trying to convince my agent that we don’t need to buy an island but she seems to want one in there. I’d rather just let the buyer decide what they want in there. It’s the type of thing a buyer can personalize. My job is to take care of all the hard stuff inside the walls etc
Then I’d say go with one that is the perfect scale, but not too pricey. They may replace it anyway.
I think that plain white baseboards would be the best.
If you go portable on the island, your agent should buy it as part of the expense of staging. A portable island is furniture (not a fixture) and one wiuld not expect it to be included with the house.
As long as you don’t put a wall-to-wall cleavage shot on the wall, you’ll be fine, cb!

Thinking of the back yard, is there any way to put some stairs up from the driveway? Maybe right by the alley? I’m picturing people wanting to garden or whatever in the back yard and no way to get stuff from the garage to the yard without going through the house. What does your agent think about the lack of direct access from the driveway/garage?
Yes, as an after thought I should have put stairs into the retaining wall from the driveway to the alley. However, my brain was thinking it was kind of a security issue to have direct access to the backyard from the alley. But, everyone has gates to the alley and I just don’t know what I was thinking
It’s too late now to cut apart the block retaining wall. We actually go up and down a small ladder that we lashed to one of the fence posts.
Buyers are going to have to figure it out because I made a mistake with the retaining wall and my brain will explode if I worry about it too much
You have bigger fish to fry. Someone can make the change years down the road.
House is going to be gorgeous!
I think a plain clamshell molding like this would be good for the baseboard:
I’m usually not a fan of quartz, but I like the one you’ve chosen. I was fantasizing about soapstone in this kitchen. A lot more $$, I’m sure!
Did you say that you going with a honed finish?
Loving the Flickr photos - thanks for taking us on your journey!
I like the plain clamshell baseboard (had no idea it was called clamshell). Reason I like it is it doesn’t have a lip on top and a bunch of ridges that catch all the dust.
Yes, the quartz is minimal sheen but not totally matte or honed. Cannot get matte/honed quartz. The reason I went with quartz is that I don’t think real marble counters are functional for a family home. Quartz will withstand the abuse. But the style I chose is not contemporary
My feeling was that soapstone was going to be too dark for the grey cabinets.
It’s like Santa Claus at the project and my home right now. Tons of boxes of pretty stuff are arriving. In fact I cannot even walk through my living room because there are 5 large boxes of lighting that have shown up. Some of the boxes are too heavy or too big for me to carry up to the truck myself so they will wait awhile until the day we are installing lighting. We are going to install the first phase of lighting next Wednesday (the word “phase” sounds very organized like I have an actual plan of which lighting gets installed when… first bunch of lighting that has already been purchased!!)
The master bath sconces arrived today and I love the coloring. They are not goldish at all (unless a warm light bulb gets installed) and definitely no Rosettes anywhere to be seen !!
Powder Room Vanity arrived. It is much greener than I hoped. Definitely makes a mockery of the ‘Antique Aquamarine’ that was advertised. However, it is a very muted tone of the front door color so I am kind of liking it. It will be isolated in the powder room and I’m hoping that it will stand alone. I like the shape and it looks really nice in the small room because the legs are raised off the ground. It didn’t come with a back splash but I’m not really worried because it is a powder room… not like it’s the kitchen sink or something.
