It is compared to our tiny 1200 sq ft house!
@kjofkw - the next trend will be what YOU love! I am ripping out limestone (limestone - WTH!!!) counters in the kitchen and putting in… drumroll… speckled Corian. Or is it called quartz now? Love that stuff.
I was just thinking about Corian and all the lovely edges it can take that you could never do with stone.
Not really looking for the next trend…just commenting that it seems to dictate everything we see. I would be delighted to see more originality, but also understand the need to be neutral for flipping. OTOH, everyone cant want only grey. We recently visited an upscale design store for fun, and even all the woods were stained grey tones Too much!.(and I like grey)
I’ve seen the tub inside the shower before and all I could think of was how that would be a really awful place to take a bath. Instead of stepping out of the tub onto a bathmat, you get to cross several feet of tile. Yuck. And a huge shower is bound to feel chilly for the first few minutes.
Sometimes these luxury items are just ill considered. I’m only 5’4" and it hurts my back to even think of dealing with a deep sink.
I don’t find the frosty gray and white kitchen appealing either. It’s funny, you can have a white kitchen that feels warm but the current trend is very, very, cold.
Well, I happen to think the house is gorgeous. The staging is fantastic!!
But @coralbrook: Apparently the guy can’t close on the chicken house until this one closes, right? And that’s not likely to happen within a week. Sounds like you should get your checkbook ready!!
@thumper1 , We used Costco for our kitchen flooring two years ago and we’re very pleased. We got LVT and get compliments from people all the time. It’s usually mistaken for tile. Dirt doesn’t show up a bit, it’s not especially cold or slippery and things like glasses don’t always break. The pattern is wonderful for hiding any dirt.
Fingers crossed for the chicken house. I really like the house for sale. With the exception of the bathtub in the shower. I like the kitchen. But the white shaker cabinets are so popular I wonder if we are going to cringe at them in 20 years.
I am already cringing at white shaker cabinets!
ITA on the white shaker cabinets and the tub in shower gimmick. What really bothers me is the apparent lack of mechanical ventilation for that large gas range. I dislike pop-up vents in general, and especially for gas ranges or cook tops, but can’t imagine not having a pop-up vent if I couldn’t do a real range hood. In that climate it may be possible to count on open windows and doors to deal with steam and odors, but that won’t help with aerosolized grease.
Silpat, Congratulations on beating me to complaining about the lack of ventilation required for that honking big Viking range. I’m like a broken record on the subject. I do think I see what looks like a down draft behind it, though.
It’s not my kind of house and they aren’t my kind of furnishings, but that’s virtually a given.
The previous owners of our house did white cabinets 25 years ago. What a royal pain to keep clean – the oily grime just never goes away. We have a big sucking exhaust fan and the walls and cabinets still get gunky. These are thermofoil cabinets (cheap reno) and they are starting to fall apart. DH doesn’t want to spend the $$ on a kitchen reno, but I am coming around to the idea that if we are staying in this house for at least another 15 years, we should update and at least enjoy it. Problem is that the kitchen design is terrible, too, so it would be a big project. CB, come to Maryland!!
I just look at all those white kitchen and bathrooms on HGTV and wonder how it stays looking nice!
Oh, and a 3200 sq ft house in Bethesda, MD would start at about $1.3 M. That’s the size of the McMansions that developers are building on quarter-acre tear-down lots down there.
@Walkinghome, what’s LVT?
5,000 sft and up priced at $2.5M and up are the mid-range new construction houses in some areas here. $1.2M is the price of a 8,000 sft lot! Eek.
LVT = luxury vinyl tile
Thanks @HImom. luxury vinyl tile. We really looked at different kinds of flooring before deciding on this stuff. It was about the same cost as tile, but didn’t have the coldness, the slipperyness or the breakabilty of tile. Costco uses Shaw brand LVT. https://shawfloors.com/flooring/tile-and-stone
Well, call me a contrarian, but I’m still in love with white kitchens and bathrooms. We did our kitchen four years ago – white cabinets, white granite, stainless appliances – and it’s not that hard to keep clean. The bathrooms we just finished a few months ago, and they are also white – cabinets, porcelain tile that looks like marble. I’m very happy with it all. It feels very clean and restful.
I think they should have chosen more interesting kitchen cabinets. In general the beach cottage style is very popular here. Everyone wants light and bright so I have no idea what the next trend is going to be for kitchens besides the general un kitchen design with less boxy upper cabinets which will be popular in the near future.
I didn’t check the stove ventilation while I was there which goes to show that most buyers will miss it also first time through. The walls are not a straight grey…more a sea foamy grey. The thing that was impressive was the extra butler pantry with separate freezer and a nice big laundry room with sink. I need to remember that in my next flip because it was impressive
If you don’t like white kitchens, you wouldn’t like the house they built on our old lot. We hear it finally sold for $2.1 million and will close next week. I’m out of town so can only view it on my phone.

I find the picture of the staircase odd. The ceiling in the living room right off of the entry hall, next to the staircase, is odd. I can’t put my finger on it.
ETA: It’s the second picture.
