Flip This House CC Remodel

I want to remodel my kitchen and adjoining great room some day but I am afraid my fantasy of natural cherry cabinets with maple floors are not in style…

Our new windows have white painted wood trim.

The new homes ($2.5M plus) we visited for remodel inspirations all had wood cabinetry. The very chichi ones had Poggenpohl. :x However, some builders put painted cabinetry so the red knobs of the Wolf range would stand out.

All this chat about cherry has me encouraged. DH wants dark cherry in our MBA and the contractors we talked to four years about it were aghast.

Painted cabinets are actually more expensive. And they are the preference for the coastal style. Wood cabinets tend to be darker and need a ton of natural light in the room. They are great for modern contemporary style (in the flush style) and a traditional style. Dfin was considering stained wood cabinets on the island to warm up the kitchen and have a mixed look. The island cabinetry is going to be a dark charcoal grey. We are thinking of having a high end type butcher block counter on island to mix things up.

@BunsenBurner what has been your experience with Viking appliances?

In researching appliances, it was amazing to find so many pros and cons to almost every brand! I definitely had this “thing” for an integrated fridge, which was definitely way over budget, but in the end Hubby and I decided to JUST DO IT. Since we ended up only having room for a 36 inch fridge, and I saw a SubZero in a great configuration on the floor at an independent appliance store, that’s what we finally chose.

We have painted white-ish cabinets in our remodeled baths, and our cabinet maker asked a couple of times if we were sure that we didn’t want to go with stained wood?? I am of the belief that nothing (in style) is timeless, and yes, that this kitchen will probably look as a defined time, just as our original kitchen was soooooo 80’s

LOL…hopefully this reno will be a little more upscale than the builder tract 80’s style.

@dfin2013 - I have not owned Viking appliances, but two independent sources (local appliance store sales person and our realtor) said that Viking’s quality wend downhill so much the higher end builders avoid it like the plague. Which was true - we toured a lot of new construction and saw zero Viking (lots of Wolf and some Milele in the more “modern” style kitchens). Love your choice of appliances. Wolf stoves rock and look cool. When we ripped out the old rusted appliances here, we went with Miele in this kitchen as it fit the style and the vibe of the house/kitchen better. I think your fridge choice is awesome. We “inherited” an old Subzero side by side fridge in this kitchen, and I am in love with it. Can’t imagine going with anything else when this one bites the dust.

Bottom line: install what YOU like, not what some hypothetical future buyer will like.

I too am a huge fan of your kitchen appliance choices. We are shopping for our next house - and hoping that the kitchen requires a complete re-do. If it does, we will go Sub Zero just like you did. For the stove it will either be a Thermador or a wolf.

We had a Sub Zero Fridge - over under freezer on the bottom - in our last house and I was absolutely in love with it. It ran perfectly for 15 years prior to us selling the house. We are in a rental now where the fridge is side by side and I swear I will never ever have one in that configuration. On the other hand, they have a wolf stove here and I do like it.

Same here, I had a Viking range in the 90s and loved it, but recently it seems to have gone downhill.

Kitchen looks like it is going to be lovely.

I have Euro style natural maple cabinets in my kitchen, which I love. I can’t imagine anyone painting them ever but that’s just me. I don’t like dark wood cabinets but not crazy about painted cabinets either. When I did my bathroom I wanted to stay in the same light wood family so house wasn’t a mishmash of different colors, so went with a natural bamboo.

“Single door on top, two freezer drawers on bottom.”

That is the design of my SubZero and I love, love it!!
We had a 30+ year old side by side subzero that just would not die and made the decision to stick with that brand when we remodeled 4 years ago.
Or other appliance choices were Dacor for stove, double ovens and microwave, and a Melli 3 drawer dishwasher- all were showroom samples so we were able to save big bucks!

I hope Dacor improved its quality… the 19 yr old appliances (ovens and cooktop) we ripped out were rusted through.

we had a 25 year old Dacor cooktop- never had a problem with rust.

I’m happy to hear that dfin made great choices. However, there was a huge compromise made. We took out a perfectly fine SS double oven from the original kitchen layout. But, because of the new window in kitchen our room for “ tall” things was very limited. So, it’s always a compromise. Perfectly good double oven is now sitting in garage and dfin bought a Wolf range, but we can only fit a 30” range

Is it a Wolf Dual Fuel 30" range with red knobs? My fantasy!

Yes, 30 Wolf range with red knobs

Passed more Inspections!!

Today we passed some inspection hurdles. The entire upstairs bathroom, office and enclosed bedroom have passed framing, plumbing and electrical. This means we can put in the insulation and get the shower hot mopped. Soon we will be laying pretty tile:). We are going to load up with tile samples and make a selection on Wednesday. I’ll load up some photos of the tile samples on Wednesday. We have one key piece selected that will drive the tile choices. 48” vanity is already ordered… midnight blue.

We also passed all the plumbing in the trenches and gas line pressure test. First house we have opened up that didn’t have leaks in the original gas lines somewhere in the walls. we can finally close trenches up and pour the slab back in place. The trenches are a safety hazard all around the floor while the guys have been trying to move the scaffolding and ladders around to install the rafters and roof.

Passed our roof plywood install and shear nailing. All we have left in the kitchen and addition area is electrical wiring and some strapping. Also the big doors and window install.

Congrats, and fingers crossed for smoooth sailing to completion.

A Wolf range is a beautiful thing and I can see the appeal for resale in certain areas.

Schedule Update

At this point I think we are close to 2 weeks behind schedule. I’ve got lots of excuses I could bring out but it just “is what it is”.

The kitchen cabinets are not getting delivered until Jan 26 and I know we have at least 3 weeks of work after the cabinets get installed which includes a whole house of flooring to go in.

I just need to target getting insulation, drywall and painting done before cabinets arrive. Folding window does not arrive until Jan 3, so the earliest we can get our full rough inspection is about Jan 5. That leaves 3 weeks for a lot of work that has to happen before we install the kitchen.

Do you ever use a waterproof membrane like Schluter Kerdi for waterproofing instead of hot-mopping?
