Florida Gulf Coast and University of Central Florida

I knew I’ve always loved UCF, and I recently visited FGCU and fell in love with it, too. I just need some help deciding.

I live about 20 minutes away from UCF, and 3 hours from FGCU. I want to become a news anchor when I graduate college, and at UCF there’s a program for Broadcast Journalism, while at FGCU I would just have to major in Communication with a concentration in Journalism.

I love the dorms at FGCU, while the ones at UCF leave little to be desired. Whereas at UCF, I would be closer to my friends and family. 3 hours isn’t a horrible trip (and with free student parking, I could bring my car with me to make that trip every so often), but I definitely can’t just pick up and go out with my friends on the spot.

I love the smaller class sizes at FGCU; 25-30 in a class, with up to 180 for lectures is what I was told on my tour. Since I’ve been in public school since kindergarten, I’m just more used to only 25 people in my class.

Don’t know much about life in Fort Myers and what all there is to do off campus. I know its pretty easy to get involved at UCF, with so many people, but I don’t really know about FGCU.

Can anybody that goes to either school tell me more about why they chose the one they did? Any little bit of insight would help me a lot. Even if you don’t go to either, I would love anybody’s opinions of which sounds best for someone in my situation.

If I were you, I’d commute the 20 minutes to UCF or attend Valencia Community College before going to FGCU. UCF across the board offers more for students than FGCU. In my opinion, FGCU is more like a glorified community college. I’ve visited FGCU a couple of times. FGCU is way east of Ft. Myers, east of I-75 in the everglades out in the middle of nowhere. The “lake” it’s on is an old mining quarry. Ft. Myers is hardly a college town, but more of a retirement town with some tourism thrown in. The Ft. Myers area economy is in the tank with about a 14% unemplyment rate right now with the housing collapse. I’ve lived in many areas of Florida, and Ft. Myers must be the hottest place in Florida summertime. If I lived in the Ft. Myers area I would consider commuting to FGCU to save money, but I wouldn’t attend it is I was from out of the area having to get housing and other related expenses. Just my opinion if I were in your situation. Good luck!

UCF is the better school. I would definitely go there if I were you.

Thanks for your input!

Yeah, I’ve visited FGCU and didn’t care for it either. I’d probably go to UCF if I were you.

FGCU has a high percentage of communters and older students. (I think it is more of a “glorified community college” also.). Do a forum search here on CC for “Florida Gulf Coast” and there are posts from people who are there and transferring out.

They say its very boring. I dont know i go to lame Edison State College and My good college yars are being wasted paying half price for the sameFGCU, but easier and less fun. Sucks but its whatever. I wish i could go to real college right now, when i could enjoy it instead of being a disoaur! any way UCF is way better, the party scene is incredible compared to fgcu. Fgcu has nearly no history its only been open for a decade or less i think. The dorms are all new but its a small campus with only like 30 - 50 thousand students. I think less than half actually live there

UCF is by far more highly regarded… but I think that FGC has a nicer campus/dorms.
Orlando is more of a big city so if you want to do an internship with a news corporation, Orlando would probally be better for that.
