Florida State Scholarships/honors program

Hoping to get some insight. I was accepted into FSU and its Honors Program but received no scholarship. I hoped to get an out-of-state tuition waiver since I am in PA. I was told I was just below the 1420 they required for the scholarship. Does anyone know if this is something that I could qualify for once there if my grades are strong or if I don’t get it freshman year, do I never get it? Any advice?

I doubt there’s another route for the waiver but not positive. Call admissions or FA. You could study abroad first year. That qualifies you for in-state tuition the other three years.

S21 is a junior from PA. Got the waiver and honors. Has had a great experience so far. Good luck.

I would contact the school to ask if there’s an opportunity.

I’d assume not (maybe departmental scholarships later).

Very impressive you got into FSU Honors - very difficult.

The school is attractively priced even full although maybe not affordable for all. Can you afford full pay?

If not, I wouldn’t risk going in hopes of finding more.

They also have the FYA that gives you in state tuition - if that’s an interest. You might ask if that can work with Honors (to be in Honors upon your return).

Great get - hope you can make it work. Ask them - but don’t risk your financial health.

Best of luck.

Congrats on Honors! Our kiddo received a great scholarship, but no Honors, so we are choosing a different school. Wish we could give you our scholarship! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Congrats on your accomplishments!!

Wow! That sounds amazing! I will reach out and see:) Thanks.

Appeal and ask for the OOS tuition waiver! We are in Ohio, and D24 was also accepted to FSU Honors but initially given zero scholarships, due to her ACT 30 super score not being the minimum 32 to qualify. She sent an appeal email to her AO and to Financial Aid, which also included updated transcripts, full ACT reports, and scholarship offers from comparable schools she had at the time. The process took about a month, but did result in FSU awarding a scholarship to reflect a 50% OOS waiver for four years, which made it much more palatable.

(She ended up getting amazing RD acceptances in mid-March and is now committed to Notre Dame.)

Thanks! I will definitely try that!

Thanks–do you recall his SAT score? Just seems unfair that I was just off (had I known the criteria was a 1420 I would have studied and taken it more than once) and that kids that get it only have to maintain a 3.0 to keep it. I asked, “what if I get a 4.0 freshman year” and was told that if I didn’t get it freshmen year, then I never get it so I can have a 4.0 and someone receiving it can have a 3.0?

I think what bothers me is that they say “87% of students receive merit-based aid”. How am I strong enough to get into honors and then be in the 13% who get nothing?

Honors at FSU is a tough get.

Maybe the merit is related to bright futures in state - I dunno.

I don’t think that figure is correct - per the CDS 312 got non need aid (merit aid) of 5922 Freshman.

You can try what the other person said. You can go abroad - and that gets you the in state rate.

Or you can find another school. It is what it is. No one is entitled to merit. At some schools, they have a table. But FSU doesn’t.

The good news is - relative to other schools it’s quite inexpensive. Tuition is $19K OOS.

Also, don’t forget at all Florida publics, you have to take classes in the summer - or get a waiver.

"The State of Florida requires that undergraduate students complete 9 hours of summer credit at a Florida state university. Summer hours at a state or community college do not count toward this requirement. Please review the official university policy in the catalog.

Engineering students who complete a full-time engineering summer internship, summer research, or 6 credit hours of summer study abroad can petition to waive some or all of the 9 credit hour requirement once they have completed at least 76 credit hours. Documentation is required.

The summer requirement can also be waived for military obligations, financial hardship, or other extenuating circumstances."

He took the ACT. I think it was a point above the cutoff that year. The requirements have increased since then. FSU is a tougher admit now.

It’s water under the bridge at this point. Move on. Lesson learned. Work on the study abroad option or look at other schools. What are your other affordable options? Good luck.
