What are your experiences with university meal plans and dining in general? Meal plans seem to be the most convenient, but can also be really expensive. Does an engineering major typically have time to cook meals?

While engineering does take a lot of studying, it is not so bad that you dont have time to relax and eat. I in school really didn’t care about my grades, I did what I could to get by with B’s and then the rest of the time I had fun. I cooked for myself nearly daily and to be honest, cooking for yourself is faster than going to the dining hall. I did have a meal plan by freshman year. I spent way more time going to and waiting in the dining hall then it would take to just walk to the kitchen and cook.

Majoring in engineering is not an excuse to not have to time to cook or have fun. If you spend all your free time concentrating on school (studying, homework, etc) then something is definitely wrong.

Yes, engineering majors have time to cook. The dining halls at my school are excellent so I got a meal plan as long as I could, but I still occasionally cooked and certainly would have had time to cook more had I wanted to. You get a pretty good amount of free time if you manage your time well.

I don’t advise meal plans if you can cook.
Freshmen at my school are required to live on campus and most dorms don’t have full kitchens so meal plans are almost de facto mandatory.

I find that I don’t have much time to cook as I would like (I may have time to cook 2x a week at most) so although a meal is more expensive it is very convenient. Especially if your school has many halls and dining options.

Now if you intend to get A+'s then you will have to sacrifice sleep, lol.

While cooking a good meal can take up a decent amount of time, you can make a sandwich for lunch at home and pack some chips for a fraction of the price of buying one (not to mention not having to wait in line).

If you’re into leftovers, just cook massive meals and eat them for dinner for the next 3-4 days. That way you can cook two times a week and have meals for every night.
