We are staying at an all inclusive resort in Mexico this summer. It’s my first time and I’m thrilled as well as a little nervous. I’m hoping that everything works out but someone in the family getting sick from the food is one of my concerns. It’s a reputable resort (5 golden apples) but still I worry. I know to use bottled water only, but is it safe to eat the fruit, and salad, etc.

We were not avoiding fruit and salads when we stayed at a fancy all-inclusive, but we never touched sushi. The resort where we stayed had its own sophisticated water purification system, so even tap water would have been ok. What does tripadvisor have to say about your particular resort? I would also check reviews of all restaurants.

We’ve been to all inclusive resorts in both Riviera Maya (Mexico) and the Dominican Republic. No problems with salads and fruit in the resort. We did drink the bottled water rather than the tap water, but the tap would probably be fine.

Luckily he didn’t come down with it until our second to last night (in the middle of the night), so he really only spent the last day and last night in the cabin (was quarantined). We were at sea that day. Then first thing Saturday morning we disembarked.

We’ve stayed in all-inclusives in Mexico three times. We drank only bottled water, because we heard conflicting stories about whether you could trust the hotels’ filtration systems. On one of the trips, I did get a case of the runs, but even that wasn’t too bad.

While it depends on a resort and I have heard that not all of them are good in regard to food even at the same location, I can only tell you that we have been gone to all inclusive in Mexico (3 different resorts) for about 17 years or so and the food was sooooooo good every time that I gain 4 - 7 lbs on every single trip, I do not even try to limit myself, I cannot find food that good at home. OMG, I do not know where to begin. In all this trips I was sick once, because I was plain stupid. So, use common sense and you will be fine. DO NOT RINSE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH IN TAB WATER, have bottle of water by your sink and use it. Bottle water is provided at request, it is included, you can use as much as you want. Fruits there are much more tasty and it is a shame not to have them. But, please, make sure that your resonrt is OK (it sounds that you already have).

Fruits are fine. If you want to be ultra-safe, stick with whatever you can peel–bananas, fresh mangoes, etc.

I have been to six different Mexican resorts, never got sick. The major hotels are all totally safe for eating, other than risk of eating too much.

Drinking bottled water is one thing, but don’t forget about ice. We tried to order beverages that didn’t require ice such as beer or wine instead of a frozen drink or mixed drink/soda that requires ice. It can be difficult in hot temperatures, but we never got sick.

^Ice was never ever a problem. I can only add that it may depend on specific place. Drinking warm mohito does not feel appetizing at all, I would rather not drink at all.

Vacation to Mexico without pina coladas, margaritas, daquiries, mudslides…is just not a vacation. Ice at all major hotels is filtered and safe. These places would be out of business if the turistas kept getting sick.

I would be reading about your specific resort on tripadvisor and similar.

We are in St. Lucia at present, and I have no idea about the tap water elsewhere on the island but our resort has a water filtration system of their own and insists the food and water are safe. I was not willing to chance it at first but bottled water is not available in the restaurants or at the beach so I just gave up and took the chance, and it’s been fine. I had a friend go to the Dominican Republic last year where her resort made a similar promise and it did not work out so well. I think if I had read there were problems on tripadvisor before I came, I would have booked elsewhere, but I haven’t read about anyone getting sick here. But here, you have no choice, there is no bottled water available except a bottle or two a day in the mini-bar.

To me, if you can’t drink the water, that means no ice and no produce. I’m not sure there’s any such thing as just a little bit contaminated, it either is or it isn’t, but I have a very weak stomach! Do your research, I am sure you will find specific info about what’s safe and what to avoid in reviews for the hotel.

I was in Cancun for the first time last January at a 4-star all-inclusive. 4 of us traveled, and only my S got sick and he thinks it was because of water he drank when he went out late at night after he tucked us in. My H and D and I ate tons of fresh salad and fruit and no symptoms at all. We also used bottled water to brush our teeth (son did not at least once).

When we went to Cancun, the resort said all their water was purified from the taps. We had "Montezuma’s Revenge"for a month even after returning home. Even though our resort was all inclusive, it did not include bottled water in that price. Luckily we travel with immodium ad, and it did not ruin our trip. Everyone in the resort had it that we spoke to, and even the newer employees. I would not chance the “purification” system again if you paid me. Not even to brush my teeth. Stick with the bottled water. I wouldn’t worry about the fruit& veggies though.
