Hey… I decided to start a new thread about the food at Emory… I am personally very curious about this so current students, please post your thoughts. Which place on campus is the best place to eat for Freshman students? What about in the following years? Which particular restaurant (can we call it that?) offers the best food? Specifically, which dishes are the most popular among students and which should be avoided at all costs? Can Freshman ditch in-campus eating and eat off-campus and if so, what are some good spots? Thanks.

I think this post deserves a bump.

I can’t speak with the experience actual students can but I had a couple of meals at the DUC (the main dining facility on campus, especially for freshmen) and the food was actually really good, contrary to the cafeteria-style stuff I was expecting. Also you have the option to use your meal plan to get fast food right on campus. As for off-campus stuff you’re going to have to ask some actual students, although I ate at a really nice Pizza place in Emory Village

um…the food sucks here. DUC is where most of the freshmen will eat, and the food gets boring REALLY FAST. Sometimes it’s just disgusting. Emory probably has one of the worst college villages ever, even a professor said so…there aren’t that many restaurants there and they all close at like 9. Yup, you can eat off campus, but you’ll need to get a ride (marta, the public transportation system sucks) if you don’t want to eat at Emory village. There is also Cox hall…nothing special there and you have to use your dooley dollars. And a couple other places…and they all get boring really fast.

^Linnus, anything positive to say about Emory’s food? Anything?

I’m hearing different stories… some say its “really good”… others say it “sucks”.

honestly? no. Everyone I know was tired of the DUC after a month. Well…actually, you do get unlimited food as a freshman lol. I have never heard anyone who has said Emory’s food is “really good.” Also, I’ve been to many top restaurants in Atlanta, and the all the restaurants in Atlanta are conservative about experimenting with their food. In other words, even the Atlanta food scene is boring (but still good most of the time).

The mere fact that you’ve been to many “top” restaurants in Atlanta “may” imply something about your background. If that is right, it may influence your opinion on the food here. Also, you may hang with a crowd that predominantly hates the Duc too (perhaps of similar background to your own). Most of the people I hang with think it isn’t that bad,and we’re sophomores.

At the same time, sophomores usually value the DUC food more because unlike freshmen, most sophomores don’t have unlimited swipes to eat at the DUC. Actually, I hang out with quite a diverse group of people in terms of race and social-economical status. You said you think it isn’t THAT bad. So are you agreeing with me that is it bad sometimes? Half of the time they run out of the popular cereals. The meat is usually dry. Stir fry is usually undercooked and oily. There is a salad bar though.

Can one of you guys suggest ONE or TWO good dishes in the cafeteria? The ones that are consistantly pretty good. Also, any sushi on campis?

Sushi at Cox. They use brown rice (I think, it’s been a while) so it tastes weird and you have to use dooley dollars (or pay using cash) for it. The dishes change at the DUC everyday, but there is always pizza, pasta, cereal, stir fry, and hamburgers. Basically, you go there and see what’s good and get that.

Any healthy options (not fried or with a crapload of cheese on it) that doesn’t involve salads? Also, how are the soups?

soups are usually extra salty. Healthy options…hmm…there is the vegetarian station and fruits

The salad bar of course. And you did not mention the classic station at all Linnus. Sometimes they produce good dishes. The pot-pies tend to be a favorite and draw quite a crowd. The Tacos/burritos or w/e are sometimes good. Most chicken dishes draw some sort of crowd. Those are, for the most part, done well. I don’t really care for pork and beef that much, so I can’t tell about those. The pasta station sometimes produces some special dishes that turn out good. Sometimes the dessert is very good too.

*Linnus, yes, I said above that the Duc has some very low points at times. I also said that it sometimes has some high points. Overall, it is not that bad. I don’t think being sophomores change our taste buds. We could just as easily use our swipes at Woodruff or the SAAC. Again, if the Duc is horrible, I can’t imagine most other schools cafeteria style food. I’ve yet to hear many great stories. Clearly the Duc can use lots of improvement, but I would not render it completely inadequate.

I didn’t remember the name so I didn’t mention it…there is also the Latin American station? I’m not sure what they call it. That’s true, I wasn’t really comparing it to other colleges’ cafeterias. I guess for a college cafeteria, it’s decent.

There are many good places to eat in Atlanta from Vegan to Ethnic, one of my favorites is the Flying Biscuit for any meal. There are many good restuarants in Decatur and good food in Buckhead. I am sure you can find good food to eat there, even if it is not on campus.

The DUC is the ****tiest food with the absolute worst sanitation ever. I find it takes me 5-10 tries to grab a bowl that is actually clean and the food is subpar at best. Off campus (not Emory Village) obviously has great food.

Virginia Highlands, Buckhead, Midtown, all over – amazing places to eat. Only problem is getting there.

There’s no Emory transportation right? Its only Marta or whatever its called. Is it a pain getting to places to get good food?

There are the cliff buses. It doesn’t go far.

Hope?
