Food processors - what do you recommend?

My Braun 2 liter food processor just died (had to grate all the carrots for a carrot cake by hand!)

It appears the Cuisinart 16 cup is highly recommended – will 16 cups seem unnecessarily large after working with 2 liters / 8.4 cups?

Any recommendations?

I haven’t had a problem using a larger food processor for small-ish quantities. The answer may depend on your storage space.

After the Cuisinart food processor that my MiL gave us 40+ years ago finally quit working, I bought a MagiMix. I think it’s a 14 cup size. Between multiple moves it was packed away. I forgot about it until I saw H slicing a bunch of vegetables one day and said that I wished we still had a food processor. Fortunately, H remembered where he’d put it and was delighted to let it finish the job.

I like that MagiMix is made in France rather than the PRC, and gets very good reviews.

We have had our Cuisinart for over 25 years and it’s a workhorse. 16 cups is big, unless you are often preparing large amounts or not happy with your 2L. Ours is the classic 7 cup and it’s rare that it’s too small. They also have a 12 and 14 cup if you want to size up a bit.

My Cuisinart DLC7 Pro is over 40 years old. Every time I use it, I pray it won’t die!

But I know it’s not 14 cups!

Regardless, you can use any size food processor for smaller quantities.

The new cuisinarts are not as good as the old. Mine is “only” 24 years old and I’ve had to replace the top twice because pieces break and you can’t turn it on. My mom’s is over 50 years old and has never had any issues. I think the issue started when they made them more finger-safe; but that switch required more little pieces that lock into place.
