Another vote for Heinz ketchup.
DD makes her own Ice-cream. So good and you know what is inside. If we are lazy and craving icecream, we go only for Breyer natural ones and Turkey Hill. We avoid any other brands.
We usually do not go for strawberries out of season, since we try to buy only organic strawberries and out of season it is very pricey. Strawberries is top of dirty dozen with chemicals for years. (Google dirty dozen.) So rule in our family: if organic strawberries are too expensive just pass…
These chemicals are starch, cellulose, and/or silica (aka sand). Not something that’s dangerous but can affect how the cheese melts on pizzas etc. (clumping vs forming a uniform layer).
Interesting, I feel like Breyers has slipped in flavor and only buy it if it’s one of the only choices. Don’t like Turkey Hill when I’ve had it other places.
And sure, homemade ice cream is great - but this thread is talking brands, so unless you’re branding out of your home…
I’m well familiar with the term and do not need to google it. We too buy organic, and Costco prices make strawberries (and other berries) affordable even when our local strawberry season is over. If I had to shop for only in-season produce, my shopping cart would be empty 6 months out of the year.
I don’t care much on brands, but hubby likes Del Monte ketchup when we can find it. Will try some various cottage cheese brands based on comments above.
I have started picking up a local milk when handy (I don’t want to get home delivery, but it is sold at a small butcher/grocery store near their office). It’s more expensive, but it fits my goal of trying to eat more locally sourced food and support local businesses.
I don’t eat cold cuts anymore, but when I did, I stuck with Boar’s Head. Same thing with hotdogs. Store bought pasta sauce – Rao’s (I like the tomato and basil best). Dried pasta – De Cecco.
The products that I buy where brand matters to me:
Organic milk—Stonyfield Farm Organic (grass fed dairy)
Mayo—Sir Kensington or Primal Kitchen (won’t buy any mayo with soybean oil) or Stonewall Farms Farmhouse mayo
Butter—Kate’s Homemade Butter (grass fed dairy)
Cottage Cheese—Good Culture 2%
Eggs—The Country Hen or Vital Farms (free range and grass fed)
Coffee Beans—local coffee roasters George Howell Coffee and Gracenote. I also have a Nespresso coffee maker and buy the pods from Nespresso. If I run out and need them my local grocer sells Peets Nespresso pods.
My husband strongly prefers Folgers instant coffee. I tried to convert him with Nespresso etc. but nope. Only Folgers instant for him.
He knows the best part of waking up is Folgers in his cup!
Not going to name the products or the company, but D works in marketing for a major food company (you have heard of it ), so we always buy their products.
I’m picky about my food quality. I like the chicken from Gelson’s market. I’ll buy Mary’s if I’m at Whole Foods. I don’t care for Zacky or Foater farms chicken.
Straus family creamery plain Greek or European whole fat yogurt. I’ll buy Fage if I can’t find Straus.
Ice cream- McConnells, Jeni or Rori’s. Or a local Thai restaurant that makes ice cream. I do buy less expensive vanilla for pie if I’m feeding a crowd.
Sir Kensington Mayo. My daughter introduced me to it as it’s migraine friendly.
Homade chili sauce for brisket making
Definitely organic strawberries.
Ice cream, you get what you pay for. Canned and frozen fruit and veggies total commodities. Will pay more for Rao’s. Costco has surprisingly good fresh fruits.
Strawberries - I see a lot of Driscoll’s everywhere - but we buy what’s at Costco (assuming they’re good) regardless of the bran (I think sometimes they are Driscoll’s) - and there’s a month or so local farmers sell them - we buy those too.
And not sure if you all have The Peach Truck where you live - they go all over - but easily and consistently the best peaches anywhere. Pricey, big lines - they saturate a city on different days - but direct from growers in Georgia and a few other states. About 3 lbs is $14 this year - you get 7 or 8.
The Peach Truck - Fresh Peaches for Home Delivery or Local Pickup
JIF creamy for the rest of the family. I don’t understand it but that’s what I buy.
Heinz ketchup only.
Ore-Ida brand fries only when we have kids over and I make their favorite burgers or ribs.
This is an interesting one. You notice a difference between Ore-Ida and say a store brand??
I’ve painted myself into a corner with regard to cottage cheese. I only like Anderson Erickson 2% sea salt. Unfortunately it’s a regional brand so can only get it at local supermarkets.
I once tried Daisy cottage cheese when I couldn’t get the A&E. It was awful. When I washed it down the disposal in the sink (because it was just inedible) I realized that every curd was a uniform size cube. Which means it was originally one enormous curd that was cut into tiny curd cubes. That does not say cottage cheese to me. I mean it’s something, but I don’t think it’s cottage cheese.
Forgot about ice cream and yogurt - Jeni’s ice cream and Icelandic Provisions for yogurt.
