Food Products That Brand Matters

Sure, I’ll choose Ohio based Jeni’s every time for my own personal stash… but if I’m having ice cream in the house for a group $9/container is not happening unless it’s a VERY special event!

I’m semi-picky on ice cream:

Typically one of the premium brands at our store – Ben & Jerry’s, Haagen Dazs, and Talenti – is on sale at any given time. That’s the one I buy. The regular prices are insane.

Sad - I’m not a Jeni’s fan - but they have a few shops in my town and they are packed. Graeter’s is much better Ohio icecream.

But the crazy thing is Jeni’s is a huge premium product and Friendly’s (loved the black raspberry as a kid) and Chip Wich are far from premium and Hershey’s too…and yet they’re all made by the same.

If I’m a jeni’s buyer, that’s a bit disappointing.

When Tillamook ice cream is on sale, I stock up. I will also admit to having quite a few seasonal flavors stocked up from Jeni’s.

For some reason, I find Ore-Ida potatoes bitter. I really like the Alexia products if I’m going to have something like that at home.

I’m struggling to think of a lot of branded things I am picky about. I will say that I choose the Wegmans brand many times and it is always good. I love their granola mix.

My husband loves Kerrygold butter and I prefer Bob’s Red Mill steel cut oats.

Still looking for the best brand of olive oil . . .

We try a store brand for everything at least once to give it a shot. So if we’re buying the name brand, it’s for a reason. That said, we do buy the name brand for quite a few things, especially condiments.

We are so obsessed with mayo that I think we’ve tried nearly all of the name brands – we don’t even bother with generics. Spouse and I both grew up eating Best Foods and are devoted. We moved east of the Mississippi and started eating Hellman’s, of course.

For years the Hellman’s just wasn’t hitting right. Still excellent but something was missing. I thought I was crazy because it’s the “same” as Best Foods, though made in different factories. So we ordered some Best Foods and did a blind taste test. It was like the food critic eating Ratatouille. So now we order Best Foods mayo from amazon :person_facepalming: but at least I know I’m not crazy.

I may be wrong but I think this producer only applies to these ice cream “sandwiches” - which to be honest, I’ve never seen from Jeni’s!!!

My H is from Ohio and always buys Jeni’s. Not local to us, we live in MA. It’s not my favorite mostly because almost every flavor is just too weird for my taste,e.g.,cherry pie. Lemon blueberry parfait. I usually buy Talenti gelato.

Most of the time I do. I prefer it to other brands as well.

We are fine with either Colgate or Crest toothpaste. We don’t use other brands except in a pinch. I’ve heard many rave about Rao’s pasta sauce and while it IS good, in this house we are pretty indifferent to different sauces. Costco does have decent prices on it any many other brands but the bottles are pretty large for just 2 people.

I lived in Cincinnati for two miserable years of my life. The only good thing that happened during that time was discovering Graeter’s ice cream!! It’s not widely distributed and I was shocked to find it in a natural foods store in Nantucket, MA. The only reason the store carried it was because the owner was from Cincinnati. My husband ordered it online for my birthday a few years ago. It came via UPS packaged in dry ice.

I only buy either Kraft or Best Foods mayonnaise (usually whichever’s on sale), but prefer Best Foods. All the store brands we’ve tried in the past just aren’t as good. DH and I also love Bonne Maman jam, especially the apricot one, and I rarely buy any other jam any more. Someone mentioned olive oil earlier–the only one I ever buy now is California Olive Ranch Global Blend. It’s really got a nice balanced and mellow flavor. Most others I’ve tried are just too strong and bitter for my taste.

For me, it’s Hellman’s mayo (if I’m not making my own) but they don’t sell Duke’s around here. I’d like to give it a shot. Is it in a glass or plastic bottle? One thing that is never entering my cart is Miracle Whip or any “off brand” mayo.

I have allergies, (GF/DF) so mine are probably more specific than others.

I like Country Crock Vegan Butter in the tub (diary allergy) over all others. It’s a struggle for me to buy it each time though because I avoid plastic.

I’ve tried a million dairy free chocolates and most taste like plastic, so I now stick to Lindt oakmilk truffles.

Silk soy coffee creamer. It’s my one indulgence. I have a vegan friend at work and every week one of us brings in a new creamer. We’ve tried all the brands and think they are all trash except for the Silk. No one else gets the creamy mouth feel right.

Smoked Salmon - Honey Smoked Fish Co. It’s very salty but I only like “dry” smoked salmon and not “wet” salmon like lox. It’s the driest one I can find.

GF pizza crust - Schar. I expected this one to be the worst because it’s in a box, but it has the best flavor and texture.

(GF/DF) English muffins - Trader Joe’s
(GF/DF) Bagels - Modern Bakery in NYC. I have them shipped

Amen to that. We won’t touch MW – we are a dedicated mayonnaise household.

I buy Jeni’s because they have a couple of flavors we like. I love the peanut butter with chocolate flecks and my husband the darkest chocolate.
I used to buy Talenti but I’ve had a few times I’ve bought where I just can not get the lid off.

Another person who cares about ice cream brand.
I get 2 pints of Jeni’s every week. (I will eat all I buy, so am limiting myself to 2).
Graeter’s is also a favorite, but it has more calories, so I have been sticking with Jeni’s lately.
Tillamook would be my brand if getting more “generic” ice cream.
Talenti Gelato is the only one I buy.

Duke’s used to be in glass but is now plastic. I also like Sir Kensingtons. Smoked salmon from Ivy City Smokehouse in DC is awesome. And Graeters was our “go to” when we lived in Columbus. One buckeye sundae, please!
