Are they really all that bad?

Depends …

Are you extremely fussy about your food? What times do you usually eat? And very importantly, do you have any particular dietary reqs (ex. vegetarian)?
I’m vegetarian and GT Dining can sometimes be hard on you if you go at 9 PM or later to get food because all the good veggie stuff would’ve gone by then. And sometimes, you’ll be stuck somewhere doing work long enough so you really can’t get a break until 9 PM.
There have been many nights when my dinner has consisted of two or so bowls of Special K and couple of apples (GT is generous with their fruits and dessert offerings …)

I wouldn’t say extremely fussy… per se, but I am kind of a health freak. I tend to just eat whenever I get hungry. If they’ve got some semi-decent fruit, veggies, and maybe some yogurt, I’m more than happy. That’s pretty much what I live off of anyway.

Reason I ask is I keep reading complaints about ants and spoiled milk and gross, soggy pizza (especially in Brittain, apparently). Just wondering if I ought to get stocked up on pepto-bismol in advance :p.

The tales of soggy pizza are accurate although I’m not sure about the ants and the milk …
Health freaks will be OK … they’ve decent salad bar, OK veggies to choose (slightly undercooked, but whatever …)
Never really experienced the spoiled milk either …
Plus, to stay fit, you’ll have access to one of the best workout centers in the entire country … the CRC.

Cool. Yeah, I’m looking forward to the CRC. I’ve been reading through all the stuff there and the classes they offer. Man, I can’t wait for August. I’m really excited about going, but I predict I’ll be changing my tune two weeks into classes. Haha.

I thought I read they were doing something new at Brittain this year. Woodruff isn’t bad.

There are alternatives on campus to the dining halls, such as in the GT Student Center:

Loading...;

and

Loading...;

ie, Einstein Bros Bagels, Jackets, Junior’s Grill, The 5th Street Ribs & Blues, Ferst Place, the H2O Cafe (Overlooking the Recreation Pool), Le Petit Cafe, Pandini’s, Tech Express, Pizza Hut, Ray’s/Cedars (near Barnes & Noble), St. Charles Deli, etc.

I assume this is not covered by the Meal Plan?

There is something called a BuzzCard and BuzzFunds (perhaps a GT student can explain) which can be used for food, laundry, and other campus expenses.

Check your meal plan to see what you can and cannot use. I think most FE plans are Woodruff and Brittain only.

Buzzcard is your id and also an on campus debit card. Some stores/restaurants around campus accept buzzcard too. You swipe the Buzzcard to do laundry too.
I think it was like 1.25 for wash and forget what dryer cost. Anyway your meal plan adds buzzfunds to your card depending on what you have. Then you can add additional money to the card at any time. You can do this at stations on campus or my parents deposited money online. I also used my regular debit card
if I ran out of buzzfunds. Sometimes there are specials if you use the buzzcard, like buying books or stuff. Check the buzzcard website for more details on that.
