Footnotes in SOP?

I want to provide sources for various things I’m writing in the SOP. Is it okay to use footnotes for that, or should I use endnotes?

Also, does anyone know of a guide for formal aspects of SOP like that?

Sources? What kind of sources? SOP isn’t a research paper. You are showing off your understanding of the field and if you need to make a specific reference to a piece of work, say the author’s name and the published text and the year in paratheses.

I mean facts about what I’ve done which reinforce my research potential, but which the committee can not easily verify without a given source. For example, I could state that only x% of the students in my country get A’s, and provide a link to a university web site proving my claim. I see no harm in including the source, because if the reader is not interested, he/she does not have to check it.

I would think that if they cared, they’ll Google it up themselves. Otherwise, they’ll use their best judgment and you will have signed that Honor Code at the end of your application anyway.

But do what you want as long these footnotes don’t affect your page limits.
