I just realized that I will be very interested in joining the McGill concert band next year. I’d like to know two things:
- Will I be ineligible/under extreme competition because I’m in the faculty of arts and science and not music?
and
- Who should I talk to that is affiliated with the department (conductor, director), because I probably should ASAP.

Thanks! -steve

Hi Steve,

I do not know how it works for ARTS & SCIENCE faculty kids but currently the Faculty of Science does not grant ensemble credits to science students, but the Faculty of Arts does- so who knows what it is for the joint program.
First what is your instrument, and what ensemble specifically do you want to play in? The Faculty of Music has numerous ensembles (MGSO, Wind Symphony, Jazz Band, CME, EME, etc.) Small ensembles are open ONLY to music students, but large ensembles are available to non-music students-
Audition sign up sheets will be placed on the Ensemble Resource Boards in the Strathcona Music Building the first week of school (orientation week) you can sign up there for as many ensembles as you would like to audition for- if you’re a string instrument or woodwind there will be a “callback” audition as well.
Just to let you know a few chairs in the MGSO (McGill Symphony Orchestra) are occupied by non-music students. So if you’re talented you stand just as good a shot.
If you want more information I recommend contacting student affairs in music which you can find info on the mcgill website.
Good Luck

hi sean-

Yes i play the alto saxophone, and I’d want to be in some sort of wind ensemble/concert band, as saxophones aren’t in orchestras (at least thats the impression i’m under). Would being in an ensemble count as credits? Or would it essentially be extracurricular?

It would count as credit-
check the faculty of music website- i believe they just posted repertoire lists for ensemble auditions- g’luck
