For CC Old Timers: the Duke Lacrosse Case

I’ve been on CC for over 22 years, and while not as active here as I once was, I think there are quite a number of us still here. When I read the news yesterday, I visited the Parent Cafe thinking for sure there would be a thread discussion about it. Surprisingly there isn’t. Back in 2006, one of the longest discussion threads I have ever seen on CC was about the Duke Lacrosse case. I admit, I actively participated on it.

So, for all of you who remember that intense discussion here, this is the story that came out yesterday, all these year later…the accuser has now publicly admitted she lied about the whole case and made it up. She negatively impacted many lives.

I wasn’t aware of this new development. How sad for those lacrosse players, lives ruined by an overzealous prosecutor. And false accusations

I vividly remember this very sad story and also thought I’d see a post on it on CC yesterday. I had to go to Reddit to find one. It’s an embarrassing moment in Duke’s history in terms of how the administration and faculty handled the situation. This women is despicable. I am glad she came out and publically admitted she lied. I don’t think that there were many who believed her by the time the trial had taken place but still good to leave no doubt.

As an attorney always skeptical of DA’s, I was horrified by the way administrators and faculty treated those student athletes without any way of knowing what happened. Duke should be ashamed of how it acted.

I remember that thread, but I didn’t join until 2007 so, yeah, it must’ve gone on for quite some time.

It’s true that few believed this woman by the time the trial took place, but for those who had ANY doubts, this states the falsehood clearly, though wayyyy too late. She is currently in jail due to a conviction of murdering a boyfriend (subsequent to the Duke non-incident).

I wonder if she can be prosecuted by the lacrosse players.

I’m always infuriated when I read of false accusations, and this one is no exception. Time and again, some people will use them to insist that most allegations are false and most women just have remorse about a consensual event. I believe it makes it all the more difficult for victims to come forward and make a report.

I am not sure if I was on CC for that thread, but remember the long, impassioned threads about the issues raised in the case and campus assaults.

False accusations make it harder for everyone.

I think that you mean “sued for damages” rather than “prosecuted”.

She has no assets so a civil suit would be pointless.

A local district attorney cannot prosecute for perjury due to the Statute of Limitations.
