For Deferred Students

The following was posted by Bizzy Hemphill, admissions counselor, on the Uncommon Blog a few days ago. Please read it through before starting any new threads with questions about being deferred- Bizzy has provided answers to a lot of the most common questions from deferred students here!

Advice for Deferred Applicants

Deferred applicants who did not request alumni interviews before may request them on their College Admissions Account. If you requested an interview but did NOT receive one (and we didn’t tell you that we had no interviewers in your particular country), please e-mail collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu. The deadline to request an alumni interview is January 4, 2009. To request an on-campus interview, please call 773-702-8650 at least two weeks in advance and before you make travel reservations. If you schedule an interview and find out that you cannot make it to campus, please call the admissions office to cancel. On-campus interviews for regular decision applicants end on January 12, 2009. Applicants to Chicago may only have one interview.

Right now, as you can imagine, emails and calls are pouring in asking us how deferred applicants can do as well as they can in regular notification, and how exactly they should update their file. We in the office find ourselves giving the same answer to everyone, because it is applicable for everyone - do as well as you can in what is left of this semester, and continue to express interest. You can express interest by writing us a nice note in your midyear report, which will be available online in January and due on February 1, or by e-mailing your regional counselor to let them know that you are very interested in Chicago. The midyear report - either online or in the form of a new transcript from your counselor - is required.

If you have new test scores, send us an official report. If you have another recommendation, have the person writing the recommendation mail it in. If you have new glassblowing techniques, email your counselor a picture. There is no particular due date for new materials, but if you could get them sent before mid-January, that would be best.

Another note: we are not able to give reasons for decisions over the phone or via email, no matter how much we might want to. And sometimes, we really want to. Our admissions decisions are made over a long period of time, by several people, sometimes during a conversation, taking into account the entire applicant pool. It really is impossible to recreate the reasons behind our decisions in a way that would be adequate or helpful to the applicant. We also do not have an appeals process.

I hope this is somewhat helpful, and please feel free to ask questions.
