For fun - looking back on your kid's high school career

Kisses on stage - the first for S was a pretty passionate one in “Much Ado about Nothing”. Second kiss was just as passionate - his Tom Collins kissing Angel. Kinda eye-opening. That was the first time I realized what I was in for as an actor’s mother!!!

I was banned from my son’s most recent performance – he told me that for my peace of mind as his mother, and to allow him to do a really good job, I could not be there. He was playing Dame Ellen Terry in Durang’s absurdist one-act “Actor’s Nightmare.”

I am laughing! My son’s very first show was Tom Sawyer and he had to kiss Becky! I still have that picture in my head and it was 6 or 7 years ago! I have watched my daughter get married and kiss passionately more than a few times and my son is about to make out with his close friend in Little Shop of Horrors next weekend. He has also shaved his head for Pappy Yokum and that was a trip!!!

What a diverse wonderful world these kids live in.

Can’t believe I nonchalantly posted yesterday that none of my kids had ever died onstage. Just had to photograph the first full dress rehearsal of our school’s “King & I,” in which my son was not only bald but, of course, dead at the end. Like an idiot, I cried throughout the last scene. Thank goodness for autofocus… Marbleheader, I’ll send a picture your way tomorrow of the dreaded diaper pants! :D

There’s a theatrical “rule of thumb” (and therefore open to be broken) that in a drama you die with your head towards the audience, and in a comedy you die with your feet towards the audience. Having your feet (and yes, your derriere) showing to the audience is usually funnier.

KEVP

Ah, interesting, KEVP. When my son “lay dead” with his feet toward the audience he was Bernardo in West Side Story. Oops. :)

When Bernardo died in our high school production, it was a comedy. Not supposed to be . . . :)

Well, “my” Bernardo was killed with what looked like a crochet hook instead of any kind of fake knife…
