A very interesting read about the consequences of Michigan’s adoption of the Common Application and how the university is trying to balance its institutional priorities while dealing with a surging applicant pool in recent times…

"Another Thought: UM was delayed not because they had trouble getting through the applications, but rather the admissions higher ups were trying to play a numbers game to increase their selectivity. By waiting longer they can collect the trickle of deposits that come in April. The more sure they can be about their yield, the fewer people they have to accept to make their targets.

A note about applications: The question to ask is not how many applied (ie selected Michigan as a school on the Common App, which was approx 38,000 for UM this year), but rather how many actually completed their application (ie wrote all the essays, submitted all the required forms, and were actually reviewed by the office, which is approx 35,000 this year or only about 4,000 more than last year)."
