Interesting. My H attended a post-grad seminar at NYU and stayed at one of the dorms, in a great location a block from Washington Square. But it was a 50s/60s building with rooms that looked like jail cells.
Do they provide housing to grad students?
This isn’t too different from what many colleges with dorm shortages have done.
Back in the '90s, several friends/colleagues who attended BU were housed in nearby hotels complete with amenities…including maid service.
This is a very common way for colleges to deal with overflow… the only wrinkle is that hotel prices are so high in NYC.
And I can guarantee you, NYU isn’t paying rack rate for those rooms.
My college ended up doing something like this - back in the late '70’s.
Of course I am not even sure $300/night hotels existed back then Certainly not in the town where I went to school
You’d have to be a certain type of kid to want to go to NYU or any uni that is oversubscribed…(shrugging shoulders).
I read the article yesterday. Nice digs, forsure, but a schlep to campus. Can’t just roll out of bed and go to class.
Many NYU dorms are far from classes. They have their own bus service.

I wouldn’t want my 18 year old daughter living in a hotel with different neighbors all of the time.
NYU may not be paying rack rate, but the students are charged nearly eight grand a semester (the same amount charged to live in suite-style housing on campus) to live in this hotel. I wonder how many students are doing that without loans.
^^^
I guess the eight grand per semester doesn’t include food which will be another expense. On the other hand room and board for our state colleges here in CA aren’t that far off. A shared double at UC Santa Barbara costs $15,468 per academic year including 14 meals per week.
I think the $16k/yr at NYU does include R&B.
Room and Board $17,580
The standard figure for financial aid purposes represents room and board for an on-campus student
living in a double occupancy room and selecting a typical 300 meal per semester “flex” dining plan (which averages 19 meals per week).
